More from Twitter? Wow, it’s as if it didn’t even lose nearly 75% of its total workforce. Good job Twitter! Anyhow, the company’s looking to give users a broader set of emoji reactions for their DMs. At the same time, Twitter’s also potentially enabling the personalization of your quick reactions display in the app.

DM-ojis?

Based on mock-ups, shared by Twitter designer Andrea Conway, Twitter’s testing a new search option within the reaction pop-up in DMs, that would enable you to use any other emoji as a reaction to a message. An extension of this would also be the capacity to update the reactions that are immediately displayed to whatever you choose.

It’s not a game changer by any means, but it could provide more ways to interact via DMs, and with more interactions switching to messaging and an increase in the desire for more private exchanges, it could be a way for Twitter to better lean into this trend and facilitate a broader array of in-stream response options.

Twitter’s working on a range of updates as it looks to drive more engagement and usage, including Tweet view counts, a new ‘Bookmarks’ UI, a new ‘For You’ algorithm, and more. Musk said that he can envision Twitter reaching a billion users per month by next year, but to achieve that, the platform needs to update its systems to show people more of what they like, which is what all these smaller updates build into. Still, it’s a steep hill to climb, even for Musk.

Last week, Twitter reported that it just broke the 253 million daily active user threshold (up from 238M). Though daily and monthly actives are not directly comparable, just to put things into perspective, Twitter’s peak was at 330 million back in 2019. Based on one of their charts, Twitter switched from reporting monthly active users to daily active ones in 2019, but looking at the two measurements, it’s hard to imagine that Twitter’s monthly active usage is any more than 100M over its current DAU stats.

This means that Twitter has likely never reached 350 million active users, yet Musk believes that he can smash that by close to 200% in a matter of months. Though that seems highly unlikely, you can’t overlook Musk’s confidence.

The Wrap

At its current growth rate, Twitter, optimally, is looking at 500 million users by the end of 2024 – 50% of the desired amount in nearly double the time that Musk is aiming for. If Twitter can maintain its current ‘momentum’, there could be a way to maximize usage growth, beyond what seems possible, based on their current stats. Guess we’ll simply have to find out as it continues to push for that next level.
