As it looks to build on its content offerings and evolve into Elon’s “Everything App,” X is exploring uncharted waters. X is now looking to integrate game streaming as part of its expanded offers. There is an experimental X game streaming process currently in the works, bringing X more in line with gaming trends.

Gaming Experiments

The experimental X game streaming process involves several steps in setting up. However, it also now allows users to run in-app gaming broadcasts, providing a means to stream gameplay. That empowers X, reducing creator reliance on external streaming sites like Twitch when creating gaming-focused content.

X owner Elon Musk highlighted the feature’s capacity with his own steam of Diablo IV over the weekend. The stream is functional and provides all the elements that gaming viewers are familiar with. Furthermore, the new gaming stream has a reasonably stable flow within the X Feed. However, X still has a ways to go to become a viable game streaming option.

Musk admitted that it is currently “way too hard” to set up an in-app game stream. Musk’s weekend demonstration supposedly took hours to put together. So, even if the option to stream games is available, it is far from optimal. Musk further notes that they need to make the process “effortless” to be more appealing. X’s game streaming process also has limited presentation options, while the app looks to integrate donations and revenue options.

Gaming is a critical focus area for all video platforms given its influence within modern web culture. Many successful online creators and influencers are part of various gaming communities. YouTube’s most popular creators are deeply connected to in-app gaming subcultures.

Specifically on X, there are billions of gaming-related posts submitted every year. Simultaneously, gaming conversation in the app saw a 36% YoY increase in 2022. Given this interest, there is an opportunity for X to build on its gaming offers. It will do X well to directly integrate such engagement in-stream, as opposed to users going to other platforms.

The Wrap

If X can get it right, then this could be a good opportunity. The keyword is “IF.” It is everything but an easy task, with other well-established platforms already dominating the market. However, the numbers indicate that the app stands a chance if it can build a seamless, integrated game streaming option. At the very least, the experimental X game streaming process is a pivotal first step. Musk confirms that they will continue to iterate on their gaming streams, aiming to enhance its appeal to more creators.
