Meta has avatars, and while they have an intuitive design, they do not have legs. Think about it – if an avatar represents someone digitally, then not having legs is a significant handicap. With that said, Meta’s latest Quest v57 update could finally right some wrongs. VR enthusiasts can finally look forward to seeing some Meta avatar legs!

Meta is launching a public test phase for its now-full avatars. Shared by UploadVR (via researcher @lunayiann), Meta avatars now have complete upper and lower torsos. That has been a long-standing issue for Meta’s otherwise superior avatars, spelling good for the Metaverse.

I Can Feel My Legs!

Legs are hard to simulate in VR because headsets lack the proper sensory components to track leg movement. In response, Meta developed a new process called QuestSim, which uses AI to estimate reactionary leg movement. QuestSim extrapolates information from the movement cues it tracks from your head and arms to ‘guess’ a user’s leg motion.

It is not the best way for Meta to invest in AI resources, but it is better than having genie avatars. Many criticize Meta for not giving its avatars legs, which has become more pressing as Metaverse development continues. The beta test of Meta’s Horizon Worlds mobile shows avatars with legs, which don’t require VR headset inputs.

Meta hopes that improving Horizon Worlds access will bring more people into its next-level space. In particular, Meta’s latest push will bring more gamers into its VR world. It could yet become a key bridge that guides users into the Metaverse experience.

The Metaverse concept has not really caught on yet, at least not as much as Mark and Co. have hoped. However, as games and other tools get more advanced, interest also grows, offering plenty of opportunities. If Meta manages to get mobile, non-VR users onboard, that could invite more people to invest in its Metaverse vision. Oddly enough, Meta avatar legs have become a key sticking point in all of this.

The Wrap

Meta avatar legs is a more significant update than it sounds. For now, Meta’s VR character legs are still in the early days and are only available in third-person view. The main takeaway is that avatar legs are on the way, potentially curing a persistent Metaverse ailment.

On another front, Meta is also expanding its parental supervision tools, introducing time limits in Horizon Worlds. To top it all off, Meta also recently lowered the age limits for users engaging in VR.
