Well, here’s an interesting new development – LinkedIn has recently added another way to keep track of your messaging chats in the app, granting select users the ability to ‘Star’ chosen conversations, which is basically the ability to set ‘favorite’ chats. While that’s not an entirely new concept, this latest update once again highlights the growing interest in facilitating more private conversations online and the equally growing hype around more interactive DMs in general.

Star It

Based on official screenshots, you can now ‘star’ your chat interactions to keep tabs on them within their own, dedicated ‘star’ filter. In many ways, it’s highly similar to Gmail or other email clients, making it a little easier to manage active and ongoing conversations. LinkedIn has been working to improve its messaging tools, with new additions like ‘Focused Inbox’, which adds a ‘Featured’ and ‘Other’ folder to essentially segment or categorize your chats.

Like all social platforms, LinkedIn has seen more and more activity shifting to private DMs, with the novelty of public posting now being overshadowed by political division and criticism, which has made users more wary and careful before posting. LinkedIn recently reported that its in-app conversations are up nearly 20% YoY, which is why it’s now looking to improve its DM options and facilitate more engagement.

The capacity to filter selected conversations could be particularly handy for those who used LinkedIn to generate leads, helping to keep track of key chats and ensure that you’ve auctioned all key contacts. On that note, Starred chats make more sense in aligning with the newer, broader conversational trends.

The Wrap

LinkedIn’s not really reinventing the wheel with this one, but more like refining a wheel that was already well designed from the get-go. While that may not bring in as much attention as introducing a totally novel concept, it does allow LinkedIn and its members to capitalize on a currently growing trend that might just allow them to expand their reach and tap into other audiences.
