Have you noticed something different about your LinkedIn messages lately? Maybe? Yes? No? Don’t worry, with all the new stuff getting dropped on LinkedIn, missing one or two updates is pretty normal. On that note, LinkedIn recently confirmed that its new ‘Focused Inbox’ format that re-routes less valuable messages into an ‘Other’ tab in your LinkedIn message stream is being rolled out to all users.

Focus on That Inbox

LinkedIn initially announced Focused Inboxes back in September, which essentially gives users two separate InMail tabs – ‘Focused’ and ‘Other’. In a not-so-farfetched sense, ‘Other’ could just as easily be labeled as ‘Spam’, but its purpose is to essentially filter junk and highlight the most important in-app outreach.

LinkedIn Product Manager Deepan Metha explained:

“We’ve heard from many of you that you want a better way to organize your LinkedIn inbox. So I’m excited to share that we’re now rolling out a new and improved LinkedIn messaging experience to make it easier for our members around the globe to find and respond to the messages that matter most. Focused Inbox offers a dual-tabbed experience that categorizes your incoming messages into “Focused” and “Other.” Focused contains the most relevant new opportunities and outreach, while Other contains the remainder of your conversations.”

While ‘Conversations’ itself remains a bit vague, with LinkedIn still very much unclear as to its exact usage stats, Mehta does note that its use on the platform has increased by 20% YoY, highlighting how more people are increasingly turning to messaging to maintain connection with friends and family. For additional context, LinkedIn had been reporting ‘record levels of engagement’ every quarter, across various fields, since it was acquired by Microsoft in 2018. To add, Microsoft is the pioneer of the new Focused Inbox approach, with the function originally meant for Outlook. How much it’ll improve your experience mainly boils down to how many messages you receive. What’s even more interesting is to note where LinkedIn’s paid InMails eventually end up.

The Wrap

Mehta says that LinkedIn will be gradually rolling out Focused Inboxes globally, so if you don’t have it yet, don’t worry, you will soon. Though it doesn’t really transform anything regarding the broader email process, it does somewhat warp the smaller aspects of email marketing, presenting you with potential new opportunities to further improve your approach. Regardless, LinkedIn has been ramping up over the last few years, making it one of the stronger players to bet on come 2023.
