What is up with all the enticement lately? First Instagram, then Facebook, and now Twitter, too? So, get this – Twitter’s looking to appeal to more brands and creators to build communities in the app with a new Community showcase option for Professional Profiles now undergoing internal testing.

As always, the peerless Alessandro Paluzzi gives us some much-welcomed examples. Based on what he gave, Twitter is currently experimenting with another new option that would enable Professional Profile users to display a chosen Community up front on their Twitter presence.

Professionally Speaking

This could help you guide more people to join your exclusive, topic-aligned Twitter discussion and enhance the value of your Communities in the process. Twitter Professional Profiles, which are now available to all users, provide brands and creators with a range of additional profile display options, including additional contact info, business category notation, location listing, and more.

Twitter’s also working on additional profile display elements, including a customized ‘Link’ display option, which would enable you to choose from various pre-set CTAs that would then be displayed in a prominent button on your profile page. Twitter’s been working to build out its Professional Account options to get more businesses to focus on their Twitter presence, which should ideally have them more active, helping them build more reliance on the app to connect with their target audience.

Adding a community highlight display could be another step on this path, while it would also help Twitter further promote its Communities option as a connection tool, and another way for businesses, in particular, to build a more focused and engaged audience in the app. Community building is far more than simply launching a group. The challenge here boils down to how effectively you can manage people and resources, which isn’t easy at all for some. Within this, you also need to see engagement, which, thus far, is still unclear whether or not Twitter Communities will actually provide.

The Wrap

At this point, Twitter’s Communities don’t appear to be adding much in terms of extra enhancements, with most Twitter Communities seeing limited engagement. Part of the reason for this is a likely variance in approach – Twitter had always been the ‘Public Square’, serving as the news marketplace where everyone could readily access the latest updates. Communities goes the opposite way.

Communities essentially limit the discussion, which, as seen from Facebook’s experience, does have some benefits. It’s difficult to make a true assessment without full Communities take-up data, but only because Twitter hasn’t released them yet. Clearly, Twitter sees value where most of us can’t and don’t. Either way, it could be worth considering in your approach and could serve as another viable way to convert followers into dedicated fans.
