YouTube added, yep, you guessed it, even more engagement options! Because we can never have too much engagement, right? So, off the bat, we have a new filter to find comments with recipes, along with a couple of extra ways to interact with Shorts creators. The farther we go, it seems, the more YouTube is becoming a full-fledged social platform, not just a video hosting app. While it seems like it won’t fully convert, this partial ‘transcendence’ is interesting to note.

Comment?

Let’s start with the new comment filter. YouTube added an option that allows you to sort discussions and make it easier to find which ones are active. It’s a good way to stay on top of videos that currently get good traffic. As YouTub explains:

“This filter will allow creators to find comments that they have previously responded to that have since received new responses. The goal is to help creators more easily continue conversations with our audience and build community through use of this filter.”

It could be a good way to keep conversations going and to acknowledge passionate fans looking to connect. The new filter will be available under ‘Response Status’ in the comments section within YouTube Studio. The new option will be rolled out to all creators over the coming weeks.

YouTube’s also adding a new ‘Stacked Bar Chart’ display for the ‘How Viewers Find You’ metric within Studio, which aims to make it easier to give users a quick insight into this specific element. Now, users will have distinct color coding that’ll make it much easier to quickly understand how people are coming to your content. YouTube says that it will look to add a similar display to other metrics in the future.

Lastly, let’s talk about YouTube Shorts – Shorts creators will now have more functionality for interacting through questions posted to their clips. With this new update, commenters will receive a notification when a creator replies to their comment with a Short, while the comment sticker can now also be tapped, ‘so viewers can watch the original Short or long-form video that someone commented on’.

The Wrap

It’s a simple addition, but it could be a good way to encourage more engagement within Shorts clips. YouTube says that the new process will start with an iOS rollout on February 8th, with an Android version coming soon. This update further highlights the popularity of the short-form format and how even short clips can now generate just as much, if not more engagement when pitted against long-form and traditional video formats.
