Do most of you remember when gimmick quizzes were all the rage on Facebook? Data-based quizzes provide some entertaining and curious results, albeit accruing the criticism of wary eyes. Social Media quizzes have come and gone, but the rising popularity of AI-generated content is causing a resurgence.

On that note, YouTube is testing a new quiz option on YouTube mobile. The new AI-generated YouTube quizzes mean to help users learn more about topics of interest. These new quizzes also aim to help YouTube better understand how well a video covers a topic. The project uses generative AI to create questions to test user understanding based on the clips they watch.

As per YouTube:

“If you’re a viewer in the experiment, you may see AI-generated quizzes start to pop up on your app homepage. The quizzes will test your understanding of a subject covered in a video you recently watched. If you choose to take a quiz, a link to the recently watched video will appear under it so you can easily navigate back to learn more about the topic at hand.”

Let’s Quiz!

It’s basically school on YouTube by AI, which sounds like something that would generate plenty of mixed reactions. This experiment looks to be an offshoot of YouTube’s ‘Study Hall’ initiative. Study Hall debuted in January and aims to provide more direct education opportunities through the YouTube app. This new test also relates to educational content, displaying the new AI-generated YouTube quizzes to viewers who have watched educational videos in the app. That kind of algorithmic curation can help solidify their topical knowledge.

For one thing, it could be a good way to embed education, instead of people using the internet as memory. In most cases, we’ve become so dependent on net-based knowledge that the internet has become our brains. With all of humanity’s knowledge accessible 24/7 through mobile devices, there’s little need to retain info in our own heads. This initiative potentially helps counter that kind of degenerative dependency. YouTube is still mainly about entertainment, but these quizzes help gamify the process, making memorization more appealing.

The Wrap

Looking at it that way, this is an interesting new element, though results will depend on users actually taking the tests. Like with most new initiatives, YouTube will only see real take-up if these new quizzes see enough usage. So far, one way to get people to try out new features is to add incentives. Leaderboards, exclusive rewards, and special redemptions are some examples that improve take-up appeal. The problem is if that is even possible with these AI-generated YouTube quizzes. We cannot provide a conclusive answer without seeing it in action first. Fortunately, that is not hard to do – time to start watching some educational YouTube clips!
