This might be a new trend to jump on or it might not. Last week, Twitter officially rolled out its new 3D Twemoji stickers within its image editor options, replacing the previous 2D versions of the same. The new versions look a bit more animated and fun, not to mention a bit shinier. Some Twitter users have already taken to them in a big way. They’re basically ‘Remastered’ versions of the original emojis, just more high-res and with better details. Goes to show how looks can be everything.

Bigger & Better

As seen in these examples, some users are posting collage art that use the new 3D Twemoji as the core element. That could be another trend to consider in your marketing approach, with the updated stickers providing additional creative options for your digital art compositions.

So, how does it work?

First, take a photo with the Twitter camera, do this by tapping on the composer ‘+’ icon and then selecting the camera option at the bottom of the window. You can then take a photo with your phone camera, then select ‘Use Photo’ to move through to the editing stage. From there, users can tap on the image, then select the smiley face icon at the bottom of the editing screen, which will bring up your various Twemoji options.

You can add up to 25 Twemoji to a single image, which can be expanded and shrunk to fit. This seems to be what most users currently do, which does look like an emerging trend in itself. Really, you just need a blank canvas image, to begin with, then you can add your Twemoji images to build the scene.

It sounds like a different way to approach Tweeting, seeing as how you can use something besides just text and images & videos, but it’s also something that doesn’t add a lot dynamically – I mean, it’s nice and quirky to have slightly better-looking and livelier emojis, but littering a thread with just icons can also be very annoying, which does present a couple of critique points for the option. It’s likely that these will be popular for a few weeks or months, but, as with everything on Twitter, it might lose its appeal after a while, despite it not even being a ‘highly requested feature’. Still, there’s something about Tweeting even just a daily status with these new icons that makes you feel joyful inside.

The Wrap

It might not be a long-lasting trend, but it could be worth experimenting with, as a means to tap into the trend, while also tying the new Twemoji options back to your brand efforts. Or you could view these as a travesty of digital creation and be repelled by the concept entirely. Either way, it’s another consideration for your Tweet approach.
