Twitter, too, has shared an overview of its top-performing elements in its top Tweets and trends of 2021. Included are most-liked Tweets, most Retweeted comments, most discussed TV shows and movies, and many more.

Surprisingly, even if you’d expect that it’s mainly a compilation of what would primarily be just internet-text, it presents us with a fairly good summary of the state of the world this 2021 – starting with ‘Most Liked Tweets’.

Drum Roll

Of course among the most liked were Tweets underlining the dominance of US politics, and of course, who would leave out anything BTS-related, right? ‘Hello literally everyone’, which garnered around 3.3 million likes, was a tweet posted during the October Facebook outage, which honestly had almost the entire world freaking out for the next 6 hours. That was really a wake up call for most of us that maybe we shouldn’t place all our bets on just Facebook alone. Personally, me and the fam weren’t too shook, there was still Viber and Telegram at least, plus who would count out good ‘ol fashioned texting?

Moving on, the ‘Most Retweeted Tweet of the Year’ is also snagged by BTS, what with their message of support to stop global racism and discrimination and to support equality. If you’ve been tuning-in with the news, then you’d likely be aware that for the majority of the earlier parts of the spread of the pandemic, Asian communities were unfairly targeted by all manners of hate, both physically and psychologically. As a result, many took to Twitter to show their support and to call an end to the division rooted mainly in paranoia.

The top 10 most Tweeted about movies of 2021 are:

  1. Black Panther (Wakanda Forever!)

  2. Godzilla vs Kong

  3. Zack Snyder’s Justice League

  4. The Suicide Squad (2021)

  5. Spider-Man: No Way Home

  6. Space Jam: A New Legacy

  7. Black Widow

  8. Dune (2021)

  9. Mortal Kombat (2021)

  10. Shrek

Shrek remains to be a much beloved film and meme goldmine, while Black Panther always had this underlying tone pointing to racial inequality, while also doubling as a memorial of sorts for Chadwick Boseman who tragically died of cancer in August of 2020.

The ‘Most Tweeted About TV Shows’ overall were mainly international entries:

“The most Tweeted TV shows included reality TV competition favorites Big Brother Brasil and A Fazenda 13, while K-drama Squid Game changed how we’ll view children’s games forever, taking the third spot for most discussed TV show worldwide. Escapism was another big theme from TV this year, creating a movement which manifested through meme creations, costume wearing, and more.

While in the US, the listing was a little more like this:

  1. Squid Game

  2. WandaVision

  3. Sesame Street

  4. Saturday Night Live

  5. Game of Thrones

  6. Jeopardy!

  7. Grey’s Anatomy

  8. The Simpsons

  9. Loki

  10. The Walking Dead

Spanning for about a decade now, Game Of Thrones remains to be among the greats, and stands as testimony to the longevity and potential of true creative writing and production.

Twitter included bits about the ‘Most Discussed Sports Teams & Events’, too, and even the ‘Most Used Emojis’. That last one is definitely one to look out for, not just for laughs, but also to note that the #1 spot belonged to the ‘Cry’ emoji, which makes sense since it and the ‘Laugh’ emoji had been switching spots 1 and 2 ever since 2019.

The Wrap

It feels as though TV and movie discussions have further grown, which isn’t too surprising considering that almost all of us have spent the last two years cooped up at home, binge watching who knows what. Honestly, that in itself provides a lot of insight, and does help explain the trend of significant increases with regards to video and TV consumption.

These listings also underline Twitter’s expanded usage across the globe, with more and more international trends making it onto the list. In turn, that kind of ‘cultural seepage’ alludes to the gradual global melding of societies, with inclusive approaches slowly finding their way onto major industries and even practices.
