Gaming is, or rather, has become the most influential element in online culture. As such, it’s now a huge topic of focus on all social platforms, with Twitter being no exception. True enough, during the first half of 2022, Twitter says that there were about 1.5 billion Tweets about gaming worldwide, a 36% YoY increase from 2021, which had already seen record levels of gaming-related activity.

Let’s Talk Gaming

If you’re looking to understand youth trends, you need to get a handle on the broader gaming chatter, and this week, Twitter has provided some new data on the evolving gaming discussion in the app, which provides more perspective on just how significant the topic is.

Over time, gaming continues to become a more influential element. To get more understanding of this, check out Twitter’s freshest statistics on emerging gaming discussions. To start, Twitter notes that gaming is climbing the Tweet leaderboard, with around 248 million Tweets in 2022, from 2021’s 157 million.

On a more inclusive note, the gender ratio in gaming conversation currently sits at 58% males and 42% females. A bit of a disparity, but at least it debunks the whole ‘women can’t game’ mentality that still clings to most of modern society. Simple as it is, this stat will play an important role when it comes to widening your audience reach and improving the resonance of your Tweet approach.

Here are some of the most talked about games and franchises:

  • Genshin Impact (40M)

  • Pokemon (35M)

  • Final Fantasy (17M)

  • Call of Duty (9M)

  • Elden Ring (8M)

Less surprising is that the best-performing subtopic goes to gaming influencers (33M). Though not the only subtopic, it basically alludes to the point that influencers are still one of the driving elements that command engagement. When crafting your own strategy, keep this in mind and work towards collaborating with some of the known gaming names on the platform.

Lastly, the end sections of the report have something to do with mentions, including streamer mentions by popularity of platform and top eSports mentions by Tweet volume. This part essentially allows you to visualize who and what gaming elements people most talk about on the platform.

The Wrap

Though you wouldn’t have guessed, gaming is a pretty big thing on Twitter, at least when it comes to conversations. You don’t go to Twitter to play games, but you should go to it if you want to immerse yourself in discussions about games, especially the more mainstream ones. The good thing about this is as games and gaming culture evolve, so too will these Tweet trends, supplying you with a steady supply of updated gaming insights to not only fuel your Tweet planning but your strategies beyond Twitter as well.
