This one has been in the works for quite some time now. Formerly available to only a select few, Twitter is finally launching a broader roll out of its new ‘Spaces Tab. The Spaces Tab is said to help improve Spaces discovery by highlighting broadcasts that are currently ongoing.

As seen in their post, the new Spaces Tab will showcase live audio broadcasts, much like Facebook’s Live Audio Room, with the listings being more in-line with personal interests and based on the topics and people that you follow. With the Spaces Tab, Twitter looks to get the attention of more people by improving broadcast accessibility and the visibility of related topics.

However, Twitter’s Spaces is different from Facebook’s Live Audio Rooms. It’s actually more like what Clubhouse has in that Spaces does not implement user-gating; it’s open to almost all users. The issue with this is that it means that there can be way too many Spaces open at a time, hindering the discovery and subsequent engagement of other potentially interesting audio rooms. Then again, Twitter never did have the best matchmaking and discovery procedures, nor does it have anything remotely close to Google and YouTube algorithms.

Keeping Tabs

One of the strongest advantages of the ‘Spaces’ Tab lies in the fact that it will finally exist. Up until the announcement, Twitter Spaces featured no such filtering and management mechanic. With the tab, users will now have higher control and better discovery experiences.

The tab will be added to the ‘bottom of feed’ function bar, allowing for the ‘Communities’ tab to also appear, providing a more “direct” connection. The main grip Twitter would have with this is merely that there will be more tabs, possibly adding more clutter to the interface. Overall, it’s a good addition; a well-deserved streamline that might just drive Twitter’s ‘Spaces’ in the direction it wants it to go. Apparently, Twitter is also looking to add another Spaces discovery element in the form of DM invites when starting a Space.

The Wrap

Though Twitter is far from being the best audio social platform, it has captured the title of best text-based social media network, seeing as how Tweets are its primary method of interaction. Though the Tweet is not the pioneer of its kind, the format that it shows has led to its tremendous success. The same can be said about audio social.

Though it’s been overtaken by short-form video, even as a communications tool, the fact that audio content, to some degree, is still relevant means that there is room for it even in the future. Even if it doesn’t succeed beyond being an engagement tool, it does have potential at least in that regard. For now, though it may not herald a second revolutionary coming of the Tweet, it at least remains as a valuable option in a broader social media sense.

It’s worth noting that the new Spaces tab is being rolled out in English on iOS , while the new DM invite is set to first release for iOS users, with Android following for both functionalities.
