Twitter just published a new report that looks at key, emerging topics of discussion in the app, based on the analysis of billions of Tweets over the last two years. As you can imagine, that’s a lot of Tweets. And the events that have gone down over the past two years have created all sorts of discussion, resulting from the various shifts and impacts stemming from the global pandemic.

A Lot of Talk

Twitter’s 2022 trend report singles out three subjects that enjoy significantly more attention than other topics in the app, which could prove useful in guiding your approach. To make the most of the discussions that are currently generating the most buzz on Twitter, try tapping into these shifts and discussions:

  • The Great Restoration – Users are looking for a higher response to climate change from corporations and governments.

  • Fan-Built Worlds – Fans are looking forward to more collaboration opportunities with developers and digital artists, enabling new modes of interaction and participation in the creation of various digital works.

  • Finance Goes Social – Largely aligned with emerging cryptocurrency discussions. More Twitter users are looking to discuss more financial options and opportunities.

To our benefit, Twitter did include overviews for each trend, supplying more contextual information regarding the driving premise behind each topic, as well as the relative rise in Tweet activity. For example, in ‘Great Restoration’, related Tweet activity went up by as much as 64% YoY for certain terms, with the term ‘greenwashing’ going up by as much as 158%.

Going a step further, there are also more specific breakdowns of topical elements where people’s attention is focused on each. Presented in a simple, visual format, these appear as ‘influence’ bubbles, where words that are given more focus have larger spheres, indicating a relative rise in activity that include the said terms directly, or at least a couple of heavily-related terms.

Lastly, each topic includes a summary of key learnings, highlighting how brands and marketers can more effectively tap into each.

The Wrap

It’s a very interesting report, doubly so when you consider that it was born out of the aggregation of a huge number of Tweet discussions over a rather lengthy period. Twitter also notes that it has factored in future growth based on past trends, essentially allowing these major subjects to also double as somewhat ‘forecasts’ to help better guide your planning and execution. For marketers who are looking to maximize their Tweet efforts, this would be an essential piece of documentation, and one that likely has long-term viability.
