Ironically, despite being known as a politically affiliated social network, Twitter has permanently suspended Rep. Marjorie Taylor-Greene’s personal account “for repeated violations of our COVID-19 misinformation policy.” Her official government account remains active, however, much to our surprise.

Widely Known

For those unaware, Rep. Marjorie Taylor-Greene has been prolific in sharing content that supposedly pertains to the pandemic but is often misleading or just flat-out wrong. This is one of the topics where Twitter decided to draw the line, seeing as how any misinformation about the virus and the efficacy of its vaccines greatly impact public health. More intriguingly, it is still unknown why a public servant, such as Rep. Greene, either fails to identify or deliberately chooses erroneous facts and statistics, when someone in her position is expected to always exercise due diligence and conduct full fact checks before disseminating any pandemic-related information.

As outlined in their COVID-19 company policy, Twitter said in a statement:

“We’ve been clear that, per our strike system for this policy, we will permanently suspend accounts for repeated violations of the policy.”

From this, we can only deduce that Rep. Greene must have already had several other strikes prior. True enough, the decision to permanently ban her account came after a series of shorter locks and warnings, all of which occurred and were reported throughout 2021. Greene had a mountain of complaints about Twitter allegedly suppressing her “freedom of speech”, despite Twitter being a privately owned platform with a clear set of rules.

Greene let loose a final complaint this morning, stating that:

“Twitter is an enemy to America and can’t handle the truth. That’s fine, I’ll show America we don’t need them and it’s time to defeat our enemies.”

Honestly, it’s frightening to see how either radical or deluded people can get on social media, especially if you notice that these people hold a certain level of influence. Though Greene’s official U.S Representative account remains online, it’s not seen activity in a little over a week, which has us all begging the question of if said account also had its fair share of violations.

The Wrap

Based on Rep. Greene’s statement, it’s unclear whether she meant that she’ll no longer use Twitter at all or that she intends to ‘defeat America’s enemies’ through other means, just not involving Twitter. Either way, my personal take on this matter is that even official representatives can misrepresent values and beliefs.

Twitter regularly issues bans to fringe figures who have violated the rules. In short, Twitter would gladly ban anyone, regardless of their rank and position, who continues to upload harmful and fallacious content. This is really good, as it means that Twitter is virtually afraid of no one and will go to the necessary lengths to dispense their distinct set of ‘justice’.
