Twitter is back at it again with more updates! This time, it’s adding a new option that allows users to pin DM chats, with the capacity to pin up to six chats at once, which will appear at the top of your inbox.

Pinned Down

If you watched the video from the official Tweet, swiping to the right of any chat will bring up the new pin option, enabling you to keep specific exchanges at the top of your stream, even as new messages come in. Are you familiar with Facebook’s ‘Pinned Posts?’ It works in the same way.

This could be a rather good way to stay in touch with your closest connections in the app, practically eliminating the need to scroll through a horde of other convos every time you just want to send a new message. Do note that DMs can only be searched by username, which was a new feature added by Twitter back in 2019. Twitter has also been experimenting with a more advanced DM search, which would enable users to conduct keyword searches for DM content too.

In some ways, it’s probably too late for something like this to still be largely valuable, but one area where it could still possibly flourish is in customer service via Twitter DM, allowing representatives to essentially Pin in-progress chats to the top of the inbox. Not only does this allow for more timely responses, but also increases the awareness of what needs to be addressed even as they come up.

Business-wise, that could be a valuable addition to your process. Having the ability to separate key chats from regular messages also serves as a good reminder to stay in touch with your main contacts, maintaining fruitful on-platform discussions as well.

Despite being an add-on function at best, messaging remains an important connective element on Twitter, especially for brands that are looking to manage exchanges with clients and customers via Tweet, which can often include sensitive information. According to internal research, while 73% of users are likely to Tweet at a brand to get a response, 52% are more likely to DM a brand account when it comes to sharing more private information.

The Wrap

One of Twitter’s current goals is to improve overall discovery on the platform, which includes all available content in its network. That would mean that Twitter’s broader efforts, though it won’t prioritize, would still touch on its messaging and messaging-related elements. It would pay off to at least give this element focus, with the capacity to pin exchanges coming in particularly handy when having to provide timely responses.

Likewise, it’s also a quirky addition for maintaining an easy connection with your best friends or largest and most important partners. A quick meme here and there helps ease the beatdown of daily work. So, no, it’s not a game-changer if that’s what you’re thinking; then again, no update has to be for it to be considered useful.
