Twitter is once again expanding its creator tipping options. Twitter is adding several new payment providers, aligned with regional entities, to help more users make money from their Twitter presence. Not only does this update help make Twitter payments more flexible, but it also adds a little bit more incentive for the top Twitter creators to remain and post more often.

You’ll Pay

As Twitter puts it, users will now be able to use Paga, Barter by Flutterwave, and Paytm to accept on-profile tips.

Paga is a Nigerian-based payment provider that already serves around 17 million users, while Barter is also a popular option among African users. Paytm services around 333 million consumers and around 21 million merchants, primarily in India.

The expansion of Twitter’s tipping options provides more opportunities for creators within these regions. It also opens up a broader potential in all markets by introducing additional payment processes. To add, Twitter will also support payments via Ethereum address, looking to lean more into growing enthusiasm and support for crypto and Web3, thus facilitating more interactions within the space.

Twitter launched ‘Tips’ to all users last September and even included the capacity to accept tips in Bitcoin, with users able to add their Bitcoin address or their Strike account into their payment options. Now, Twitter is looking to further extend this, providing another way for crypto enthusiasts to use the app in new ways, which could help Twitter gain more traction among this growing audience.

On-profile tips have steadily gained ground and have become key elements in the growing creator economy. Most platforms are now offering some form of direct payments for creators, enabling fans to show their support and appreciation, while simultaneously granting creators a direct revenue stream. However, it’s hard to say exactly how effective this would be in Twitter’s context. With so many users now accustomed to reading Tweets for free, a lot of them are hesitant to pay up, even via Twitter’s ‘Super Follow’ option, which is already probably the closest that users can get to creator-exclusives.

To cut things short, Twitter is still establishing itself in many regions and will have to face a lot of uphill battles when it comes to user attitudes and behaviors on subscription-based offers. The main thing to note is that Twitter continues to grow, even by just a bit, in line with the emergence of new trends.

The Wrap

Having more payment options available is a good thing, especially if you’re trying to situate yourself in developing markets. Facilitating more payment options has so far been a key step in achieving both creator and platform success. Optimal monetization seems to be the game right now and while Twitter still has a bit of catching up to do, it’s doing decently given the number of changes it had to adapt to in the last five years.

Twitter Tips are also available via Bandcamp, Cash App, Pateron, Razorpay, GoFundMe, and PicPay. If you want more information about Tipping, check out Twitter’s FAQs here. You might also want to take a gander at Twitter’s updated overview of its creator monetization offerings.
