Are you ready for edit options for your Tweets? After ages of being the most requested Twitter upgrade – and repeated rebuffs – it appears that Twitter’s newest big-shot shareholder is looking to use his newfound influence to bring this dream to life. Oh, and did we fail to mention that Elon Musk is now a board member?

Twitter Musk-Haves

Musk recently created a poll on Twitter asking whether or not people would like an edit button. 4 million people careened to Musk’s poll, with 73.5% being in favor of the option. Twitter CEO Parag Agrawal states that it may well become a reality, citing one of Musk’s Tweets that sort of pokes fun at the way the platform is currently being run.

Late last week, Twitter noted that it was already working on an edit button, but the proximity of the announcement date to April 1 saw it dismissed as a joke. However, Twitter’s Michael Sayman, another new voice on the platform, says otherwise. Though still majorly unclear, all these elements, cumulatively, suggest that Twitter is at least exploring an edit option once again.

As mentioned, Twitter has long-resisted calls for an edit button, with former CEO Jack Dorsey citing concerns around users changing re-Tweets after the fact. Jack also suggested that the more concise nature of Tweets leaves them more susceptible to subtle edits that could prove to be problematic. In early 2020, Jack pretty much killed off all hopes of an edit option, though Twitter did offer an ‘Undo’ option for its Blue subscription.

Though deleting and re-sharing an updated Tweet is something that you can pretty much already do, this is the closest Twitter came to an ‘edit’ option while still under Dorsey’s leadership. The fact that this was only available to those willing to pay for an exclusive subscription further irked users to clamor for legitimate Tweet edit capacity. Just when things look bleak on Jack’s departure, Elon’s arrival seems to mark a sort of revitalization of the users’ wishes – Tweet editing now looks like a possible reality.

Though it won’t solve all of our Tweet concerns, it could well be a handy addition, though there are also concerns about changes like these getting blown massively out of proportion. For some reason, most Tweet trends start as being the biggest, most wanted thing in the world and once they do arrive, they simply aren’t anymore. It’s not impossible to attach the same thought to Tweet editing, even if it does come around due to Elon Musk.

The Wrap

Avoiding seemingly unrelated information and heavily opinionated inputs, this really does boil down to why editing posts or messages on Twitter wasn’t a thing available from the get-go – because why would it, right? At the very least, adding an option to edit Tweets could spell wonders for PR, with Elon Musk being placed closer to the top of the pedestal as being history’s coolest billionaire.
