So, we’ve done two other platforms already; next up is everyone’s currently most-favored chaotic space – Twitter! Yes, despite the abysmal spiral that Twitter has jumped into ever since being acquired by Elon Musk late last year, it does seem that the app will remain operational through 2023, meaning that there are still opportunities to be had. Well, before it ends up obliterating itself, that is. Hopefully, that never comes to pass, as that would mean wasting these perfectly sensible 2023 Twitter tips!

Key Considerations

If we were to jot down all of the recent changes on the platform, we’d likely run into the character limit for anything that would want to fall under the ‘Short Read’ category. To avoid having to present a thesis to all of you, here’s an extremely watered-down synopsis of the recent and most relevant changes to Twitter:

  • Twitter’s moderation policies have remained largely unchanged. The current regulatory status of Twitter, much like the rest of it, is currently a mess, with Musk personally reinstating some 60,000+ previously banned accounts, some of which have gone back straight to sharing harmful content.

  • Twitter has cut its total workforce by around 75% to help reduce costs. It has closed down international offices and cut off some ad partners to further rationalize expenses and bring its fund bleed under control. This would also explain the subsequent constant errors and slow-down in site performance.

  • Musk might look to one day use its $8 verification program and ‘Verification for Organizations’ to paywall higher brand reach. Hey, Musk needs to make money somehow, and this seems to be his best bet.

Tweeting Tips

Over the last few years, one of the key changes was the de-prioritization of Hashtags, which was recommended by Twitter’s own team. In certain scenarios, Twitter even advises against using Hashtags as they can supposedly distract you from the main goal. It’s more of a suggestion that it is law, so you must still factor it in. What’s highly recommended is that if you do decide to use Hashtags, conducting proper and thorough research is key. Hashtagify has you covered here.

Alternative Feeds

These caused a bit of a ruckus when first introduced in early 2021. Twitter’s new ‘Following’ Feed is but a side-swipe away, allowing users to juggle whether or not they would want to see the absolute landfill of algorithmic recommendations that Twitter is now throwing all of its users’ way. It’s currently still very wonky, but over time, Twitter is hoping that it can refine its algorithms to actually be beneficial.

When it comes to Tweet content, Twitter advises brands to adhere to its ‘Three C’s Approach’, which means:

  • Concise

  • Clear

  • Conversational

Brevity has always been Twitter’s niche, meaning that the best-performing Tweets are those that are under the character limit, mainly between 50 – 100 characters. It’s not always easy; Tweets are short, interesting, and directly to the point. ChatGPT pops up to once again potentially save the day.

Twitter Search

You can also use Twitter’s advanced search tools to uncover the top-performing Tweets using target keywords, listing them based on engagement. This should help give you an idea of the top Tweet conversations about your product/service, which could help inspire better ways for you to spark more engagement and align with the relevant Twitter community.

Professional Profiles

If you want slightly deeper access, you can try out Twitter’s ‘Professional Profiles’, which enable brands to convert their Twitter profile to a business account. Some of the extra features offered are:

  • Additional Analytics – Professional accounts can access a dedicated dashboard of analytics tools to track performance.

  • Professional Category – Pro accounts can signify what their business is on their profile, which could help to highlight your business to relevant users.

  • Profile Spotlights – Twitter’s also added a range of ‘Spotlight’ options for professional profiles, which enable you to showcase your products, location, contact info, and more in a dedicated profile section. The current Spotlights available are location, shopping, mobile app link, and CTA link.

  • Twitter Shopping – Pro accounts can also access Twitter’s evolving shopping features – though hard to tell how much emphasis Twitter will be putting on shopping as part of its ‘Twitter 2.0’ revamp, at least at this stage.

The Wrap

Granted, Twitter isn’t in the best place right now, and there’s a lot going on; some people might be opposed to brands even considering putting more focus on the app given all the recent criticisms regarding the drastic management changes. Even so, Twitter continues to be a significant source of news and opinions, keeping it current enough to be important for brand outreach. Whether or not the platform is staying on course or veering off course, there are opportunities to be had. Good luck with your Twitter journey this year!
