How else can TikTok improve content discovery and engagement? Well, apparently with this new functionality it’s introducing – just when we all thought that TikTok couldn’t get any more viral than it already is, it’ll soon be allowing users to tag TV shows and movies in their uploads, linking through to IMDb for more info on whatever it is that you included. While not really a hard addition to its search capabilities, it does help adjust a little bit more relevance to search and discovery on TikTok, furthering its march into Google’s whole ‘Search Engine’ monopoly (kinda).

IMDb Tier List

Based on this example, users will soon be able to select a movie or TV show to link into their TikTok clips. This tag will then be displayed above the video caption and will direct users to a dedicated page in the app which will display basic info about that content, sourced from IMDb, including release date, cast notes, and more.

Viewers will also be able to tap through to the full IMDb page if they choose, additionally, they’ll be able to have the option to save that movie or film, essentially bookmarking it for later. Users can also find a listing of other TikTok clips that have linked to the same show/movie to glean more insight via TikTok clips.

It’s a good way for TikTok to further lean into the popularity of trending TV shows and films in the app, providing more direct promotion of the source material. This decision might have originated from the fact that too often, people would post a random clip from a show, but it would be difficult to determine which show the clip really came from.

True enough, TikTok says that videos using the tags #FilmTok, #MovieTok, and #TVTok have a combined view count exceeding 25 billion, providing more context which can only be more beneficial for both users and film production groups. While it can be argued that these producers and production houses would prefer if people didn’t randomly post content from their works without due citation and licensing, it does help with promotion, increasing people’s awareness of their material, which does have benefits that outweigh the costs.

It’s a simple way for TikTok to facilitate more connection between itself and famous media sources, especially with TV and movies. Everybody should be aware of just how popular trending music is on TikTok, so you can imagine just how much it would blow up if you knew that you can now also chuck in some of the most iconic TV and movie scenes.

The Wrap

So far, the only confirmed rollouts are planned for the US and the UK, with an expansion to more regions scheduled somewhere down the line. It’s impressive to see how such a simple addition would have ripples of implication on TikTok, a testament to just how much influence the app now commands. If you’re a fan of giving your own take on things through the creative use of famous pop-culture material, then you might find great success with this new push.
