Threads, Meta’s real-time discussion platform, is piloting a long-awaited feature: the ability to save posts within the app. This update aims to align Threads more closely with other social media platforms and meet users’ demands for enhanced functionality.

In the test phase, users included in the trial can access the “Save” option from the three dots menu on any post within Threads. Saved posts will be conveniently stored within the user’s profile menu, akin to Instagram’s save feature.

Continuing its efforts to catch up with competing apps, particularly X, Threads is part of Meta’s strategy to challenge X’s dominance and attract users disenchanted with recent changes implemented by Elon Musk on the platform.

Despite recently reaching 130 million monthly active users, Threads still has ground to cover, as Musk revealed updated download figures highlighting X’s continued popularity. X’s recent surge in interest, possibly fueled by Tucker Carlson’s interview with Russian leader Vladimir Putin and controversial content like Drake’s videos, underscores its position as a go-to platform for real-time news discussions.

As Threads endeavors to win over more users from X, it faces the challenge of countering Elon Musk’s dissemination of misleading data regarding X’s performance. Musk’s selective sharing of web traffic numbers, omitting app usage data which constitutes the bulk of social media access, creates a distorted image of X’s standing compared to competitors like TikTok and Instagram.

Despite the lack of reliable usage information from X, official App Store charts indicate ongoing interest in the platform, reinforcing Threads’ need to enhance its real-time sorting and engagement tools to remain competitive. The upcoming Super Bowl weekend will serve as another litmus test, with X expected to dominate related engagement, underscoring the urgency for Threads to refine its real-time capabilities.
