Snapchat Lens usage has always been notable. Ever since Snapchat introduced the idea of AR and VR effects and their related elements, the platform has since dominated the space, outperforming bigger and better-resourced companies such as Meta, Apple, and Google when it came to AR innovation and integration. Though it had a bit of a salty run this year, Snap recently shared an overview of the top Snap trends of 2022, including the most popular Lenses, Snap locations, movies, songs, and more.

Keeping It Snappy

Again, and we can’t stress this enough – throughout 2022, Snapchat will remain the leader in the AR space. Imagine how impressive it is to be heavily impacted by tough market conditions and still be #1. Snap’s Lenses have continually sparked new trends, which then expanded across apps. Its’ Crying Face’ Lens is a prominent example from this year, while other Lenses like ‘Anime’, ‘Cartoon Kid’, and ‘Shook’ also saw significant use.

Snap also notes that the number of Snap Stories with music grew by more than 3x this year, which is partly due to TikTok sparking all new music shifts and usage behaviors that have echoed over to Snap.

Snap’s overview also holds some notes on popular and relevant movies and TV shows that stir up conversations on the platform. While the top tourist locations don’t really provide a lot of useful insight, they are interesting to note solely based on their usage trends. To add, Snap’s also launching a new Year End Stories feature, which will provide an automatically generated Story made up of your favorite memories from the past year. Find the option by swiping up from the in-app Camera.

You can check out Snap’s full 10-page trends report here. Let’s quickly look at some of the most highlighted points:

  • Snap’s ‘Crying’ Lens is the ‘Lens of The Year’, being viewed over 9.7 billion times.

  • The top shows discussed among Snapchatters belong to the ‘Action’ and ‘Drama’ genres.

  • Some of the top travel destinations among Snapchatters are The Big Ben, St. Paul’s Cathedral, The Empire State Building, and more.

The Wrap

Despite its smaller size and more constrained reach, Snap continues to be a rich source of insight. If you didn’t know, Snapchat is currently restructuring its audience strategy and intends to diversify its offerings to appeal to older audience brackets, despite the fact that it still enjoys a strong reputation among younger ones. Snap’s 2022 trend report should offer you several considerations that should bump Snap up your list of platforms to focus on in 2023.
