It’s another first for Pinterest. In the latest news, Pinterest just published its first-ever Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Impact Report, which outlines the company’s various efforts to address workforce diversity, product safety, environmental impact- you kind of get the point based solely on the name alone. The report provides some interesting perspectives on Pinterest’s usage and growth.

It’s Critical

Let’s start by taking a look at an overview of some key stats:

  • 3,987 Full-time Employees.

  • Supports 37 Languages.

  • 390+ Billion Pins saved.

  • 450M Global Monthly Active Users.

Pinterest saw steady growth in users throughout 2022, and as it continues to expand into new regions, the platform’s also keen to approach each through a measured and considered strategy. Pinterest’s report looks at how it has strategized its ESG planning, along with the key pillars of its success.

Pinterest’s report centers around three major pillars: People, Product, and Planet. It includes internal insights into the app’s staffing approach and how it tracks its goals on diversity. Pinterest is keen on equal representation for all, making its ethnic data section a key consideration for those who would (and should) want to tap into the diverse and wide-reaching audience segment that is Gen Z.

Pinterest was also among the first of the major platforms to voice out its goal of raising awareness on the various environmental issues the world currently faces, which, in the report, includes some key statistics on its own carbon emissions.

While it may come off to some as just another PR stunt to try and win favor, the report provides an interesting look at how the company addresses the different elements that it includes, which could just provide a handy framework to guide your own approach, in mapping out a more specific, dedicated structure for meeting these key areas of concern. Furthermore, Pinterest also details how it’s going about creating a ‘positive coroner of the internet’ through the app, via its various policies and updates regarding user experience.

The Wrap

While often underrated, it’s always good to see platforms making these elements a priority, and, all-in-all, how it makes progress in each element as it keeps on growing and expanding. To most, it may sound like such a ‘hippie’ thing to go on about, but we all have to understand that times are changing and that more and more of the world is also beginning to shift its mindset towards more inclusive concepts and practices. Pinterest may be out to try and become the next biggest online commerce app, but it has also been the definitive space for unfiltered self-expression and a source for many supportive materials that aim to preserve, if not improve well-being.
