Based on just the title, what do you think this could be? Trends have proven to be the core fuel that turns the gears of Social Media. Whatever gains traction; whatever achieves virality on Social Media is often either related to or stems from trends. On that note, Pinterest recently published its annual ‘Pinterest Predicts’ overview that looks at the latest, rising trends that are set, or at least believed, to be more significant over the next year.

“Based On…”

Pinterest earned a name for itself as being able to accurately ‘predict’ social and content trends, before they actually happen, basing its predictions on user behaviors, saved Pins, boards created, and overall search activity. True enough, Pinterest says that its annual prediction reports, which it has now been running for 3 years, are 80% accurate, based on engagement volume.

On that note, let’s get to the meat of the discussion – what are the key trends expected to run through 2023?

Before we get to the details, first know that Pinterest separated its predictions into four key categories – ‘Fashion’, ‘Home’, ‘Celebrations’, and ‘Well-being’. So, chronologically, let’s start by taking a look at the Fashion category; Pinterest says that ‘Airy Styles’, using lace, tulle, and ruffles will become increasingly popular among Gen Z and Millennials. As far as Pinterest would care to define it:

“After two years of sweatpants and loungewear, the focus is now on body-baring silhouettes.”

In short, it’s like looking at a cross between David Bowie and an 80s Madonna. Not literally but you get the point.

Moving on, Pinterest also notes that ‘Romcom Core’, which incorporates slip dresses, tube tops, and cargo pants, will be another trend to watch out for. I mean, cargo pants never really died out, so there’s that, too.

When it comes to home decor, Pinterest says that ‘Hipstoric’ will be a key aesthetic of note. Another home trend to watch out or plan ahead for would be ‘Weirdcore’, which, in case you were wondering, has something to do with weirdly put-together interiors; think Dr. Seuss designs.

In terms of celebrations, Pinterest expects to see more dog pool parties being thrown, which is a big bonus for all you pet lovers and fur parents out there. And lastly, just to cover ‘Well Being’ real quick, Pinterest says that searches around ‘Primal Movement’ are on the rise. So people want to go back to animalistic ways then? Very interesting. Pinterest also infers that postpartum periods will be a bigger focus for new parents and on-parents alike, which it coins as the ‘Fourth Trimester’. You can check out more on these big shifts here.

The Wrap

While these are still mainly predictions, therefore they may or may not really happen, they might mean something to you, if not give you a basic idea of what elements to focus on to guide your planning for 2023. If you take Pinterest’s word for it, then these predictions are likely accurate, making them worth considering. Looking to make Pinterest a bigger focus next year? Then this is something you’ll likely need.
