Pinterest is moving to give its staff more lifestyle flexibility through the expansion of its ‘PinFlex’ employee incentive program. As of July 1st, Pinterest will now allow full-time employees to spend up to three months working outside of their country of employment, over a rolling 12-month period.

As Pinterest puts it:

“We listened to feedback shared by employees and added this flexibility to empower everyone to do their most impactful and inspired work. Our Pinners are global, and we know that having worldly perspectives in our company to support them – both at the technological level and the human level – will enable us to deliver on our mission to bring everyone the inspiration to create a life they love.”

It’s For Your Best Pinterest

This new, expanded benefit will be available to all Pinterest employees who’ve been with the company for at least six months. Meanwhile, those who have been with the company for less than six months will be able to work outside their country of employment for up to 30 days max.

This should help provide significantly more opportunity to both travel and work, which further leads to the new norms of the modern workforce, with the pandemic-induced work-from-home shift opening new doors for consideration on this front.

In reality, it’s something that all businesses and Governments should be exploring. Many of today’s most significant environmental and infrastructure challenges of modern society are based on centralized labor, with the majority of workers coming together into metropolitan hubs to maximize their career opportunities. Then again, as the pandemic has shown, a lot of the jobs we thought couldn’t be done at home were actually possible. If work-from-home were to become the norm, it could reduce traffic, bring down property prices, help employees cut back on costs, and much more.

This could also lead to new opportunities for regional towns and reinvigorate more areas of the economy. There are pros and cons to assess in all elements, but overall, it seems to be a worthy push for governments who look for ways to democratize opportunity and growth.

The Wrap

This is where Pinterest’s newest push could truly be beneficial, not just for its employees, but also for the transient towns that could use the boost of ongoing business. It’s an interesting concept, which once again leans onto the broader workforce trend. It might just lead the way for other businesses.
