Pinterest is launching version 5 of its Pinterest API, which enables developers to build separate applications to facilitate Pin creation, presentation, and management. Expanded access will now be open to all developers, as opposed to being limited to select partners.

As Pinterest explains:

“The Pinterest API (v5) is the single API for developers to build applications and solutions for merchants, advertisers, creators and Pinners to drive results on Pinterest. Developers who have been waiting years to get API access, are now able to without revenue minimums. We are actively reviewing all requests to access the Pinterest API, and developers may be approved as quickly as 1 business day.”

5th Form

For more context on the magnitude of such an update, API stands for Application Programming Interface, which, in the most basic sense possible, is a process that allows two applications to ‘talk’ to each other, such as when you send a DM on Messenger or Instagram. Taking things a bit further, almost every app that requires internet connection makes use of some sort of API since said app would need to communicate with a specific server so that data could be processed.

On this note, Pinterest’s new API will include elements on shopping and content & analytics, enabling new functionalities within third-party apps and tools, providing more ways to manage and maintain your Pinterest presence. For more details, the new API offers:

  • Shopping App Solutions

Offers additional management capacity for your Pinterest product catalogs with a focus on improved data quality.

  • Ads Creations

Improves on existing functionality available in its V4 API.

  • Additional Scaling

Investments in SDK and Sandbox allow for more development and testing at scale, which helps out expansion once platform growth stabilizes on an incline.

Pinterest’s latest API will also allow developers to utilize the Pinterest taste graph, which includes ‘more than 330 billion projects, places, and products’, potentially seeing the emergence of all new data insights apps and tools.

The Wrap

For any platform, API updates don’t come as often as most other updates do. In fact, API updates are somewhat rare, marking relatively major improvements or additions when they do occur. Pinterest’s new API essentially facilitates  new use cases for these elements, such as on-site widgets and extra Pin management tools, providing all new ways to showcase and interact with Pin content even beyond the app.
