Pinterest is looking to also jump on the rising live-commerce trend, which has already seen massive success in China with its series of live shopping events. It calls its new initiative ‘Pinterest TV’ and has even released an official Tweet announcing its launch.

Pinterest explains:

“Today, we’re announcing Pinterest TV, a series of live, original, and shoppable episodes featuring creators right on Pinterest. Pinterest TV episodes are refreshed each weekday and will be recorded and available for Pinners to view on-demand and save and rewatch later.”

The new series of live streams that primarily focus on e-shopping is scheduled to air on Nov. 8 and will give Pinners a chance to grab some exclusive in-app deals simply by engaging in the live-stream broadcasts. Now that’s some value-added viewing right there.

To elaborate, Pinterest says:

“Each Friday, products will drop in a live shopping setting where Pinners can take advantage of discounts from brands including Patagonia, All Birds, Crown Affair, Melody Ehsani, Outdoor Voices, Mented, and more. Simply click the TV icon in the upper left corner of the Pinterest app to view episodes, interact with hosts, ask questions via chat, and get answers live.”

Pinterest has recently been exploring more live-stream options to further maximize its broader eCommerce push. With the rest of the competition divulging resources to capitalize on the rising trend of digital shopping, Pinterest sought to leverage off of its strengths and use its channels to bring about a new emergence of live-commerce on the platform. In line with recent efforts, Pinterest has also just recently launched a series of celebrity-led lives-streams as part of its ‘Creators Connect’ event.

A rather timely move, seeing as how the holidays are coming up and that this year’s festivities look to be the biggest they’ve been since 2019 – that’s a lot of potential online shopping. In addition, Pinterest is also launching a new initiative to aid creators in starting their shopping live streams.

As per Pinterest:

“Along with Pinterest TV, Pinterest is launching a virtual studio where Pinterest producers work directly with each creator to develop unique content, providing “backstage” A/V support, and go live with engaging episodes.”

This puts more emphasis on the platform’s focus on live shopping and stands to bolster its efforts further. It also offers creators more opportunities to sell on the platform directly, contributing to Pinterest’s overall eCommerce performance.

The Wrap

The rising interest in online shopping, which is perhaps an indirect by-product of being forced to stay at home due to intermittent quarantines and lockdowns, has led to the sudden rise, or at least boom, of eCommerce. This new trend, in turn, has allowed social media platforms to significantly increase their revenue generation by essentially providing users, creators, and visitors the opportunity to buy in-stream.

Ideally enough, Pinterest has made product discovery and shopping its key focus long before the pandemic. CEO Ben Siberman noted in 2016 that it was not a “social app”, but rather a “catalog of ideas” (hence its Pinboards). Such direction meant the shopping had always been part of its logical progression, facilitating an eCommerce push long before it even caught on as a wide-reaching trend. eCommerce stands to be the next big shift, and Pinterest, along with the likes of InstagramTikTok, and Youtube, looks to be the next proponent of live-stream shopping.
