We’re taking a break from headline news that feature either Threads or X. Fellow Meta app WhatsApp adds video messages to chats, enhancing engagement and the medium’s appeal. Similar to voice messages, video messages allow users to insert video clips into their WhatsApp chats. There is a growing shift back to messaging, so this update could prove advantageous for the platform.

Video In A Bottle

As seen in this example from X, WhatsApp video messages are displayed in circles. That provides users another way to share direct responses in-stream. As WhatsApp explained:

“Video messages are a real-time way to respond to chats with whatever you want to say and show in 60 seconds. We think these will be a fun way to share moments with all the emotion that comes from video, whether it’s wishing someone a happy birthday, laughing at a joke, or bringing good news.”

This update brings WhatsApp more in line with other social and messaging platforms, especially in facilitating video connection. To emphasize the point, video connection is the preferred interactive option in most apps. As mentioned earlier, more people are migrating to private messaging as a result of wanting more intimate online connections.

To record a video message, tap on the screen to switch to video mode, then hold to record a video.

“You can also swipe up to lock and record the video hands-free. Videos will play automatically on mute when opened in a chat, and tapping on the video will start the sound. Video messages are protected with end-to-end encryption to keep your messages secure.”

Creating a video message is simple, but they could start clogging up your Camera Roll or gallery with downloads enabled. That aside, the new option provides another way to enhance the in-app connection, which opens up new use cases. Brand accounts can also utilize the feature. For example, brands can use short videos to send product examples, explainers, and previews. That can boost a brand’s on-platform customer service capacity.

The Wrap

WhatsApp adding video messages will improve its internal engagement while boosting and preserving its relevance. The new option should be available to all users a month from now. It’s a simple update, but it also caters to a broader trend that shapes the current Social Media landscape.
