Say what you will about the new Threads app – Twitter duplicate, Instagram springboarder – the fact is that it is hot. Regardless of the framing, Meta’s Threads is set to become the fastest-growing app of all time. In less than a day, Meta’s new app has amassed more than 30 million users.

Shared by Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Threads is rapidly adding users as more people flock to it to reserve profiles. For now, Threads is riding the new-app wave, with people eager to check out its offers. You cannot do much on Threads, but it seemingly looks like a viable Twitter alternative.

To New Heights

Threads is now on pace to overtake ChatGPT – the current fastest-growing that reached 100 million users in 2 months. A better comparison has to be Meta’s Messenger app, which quickly grew after Facebook began prompting its download. Messenger growth was quick after Meta’s promotional push, adding around 300 million users within 6 months. The funny thing is that Messenger was already around for years before Meta started pushing it in people’s faces.

What that means for Threads is that it is now on track to reach 50 million users by the weekend. If it can pull this off, Threads takes the crown sometime next week. That will undoubtedly raise the hackles of Twitter CEO Elon Musk. Musk has been suspiciously quiet about this new Twitter clone getting a lot of early attention. Musk supporters have been critical of Threads’ data-gathering process and its apparent user censorship. Meanwhile, new Twitter CEO Linda Yaccarino defends the uniqueness of Twitter’s approach.

It is too early to say whether or not Threads will become a true Twitter rival with its limited functionality. Threads still is not as comprehensive as Twitter, although its current core offer can match Tweets. At the very least, it is likely worth giving Threads a shot. Even if Meta is using Instagram to ramp up Threads onboarding, its now-billion daily active users is way more than Twitter’s 250 million. If you don’t download the app now, you could be missing out on tons of potentially trending discussions.

Threads’ hot-cake status will also attract ad-buyers, further boosting Meta’s revenue potential. The fact that Meta is branding Threads as a Twitter rival shrinks Twitter’s market. Combine this with the plethora of challenges and complaints about Twitter, and Threads has a lot to win out on. If Threads is doing this well at launch, imagine how better it will get once it evolves.

Here’s how Mark Zuckerberg is marketing Threads:

“It’ll take some time, but I think there should be a public conversations app with 1bn+ people on it. Twitter has had the opportunity to do this but hasn’t nailed it. Hopefully, we will”

The Wrap

There are a ton of Twitter clones out there, most of which are just try-hards. Threads is clearly the best choice, giving it plenty of bargaining power and potential. Despite its bare-bones presentation, it has solid core functionality, infrastructure, and reach. While there are still a lot of elements to develop, Threads feels like another new shift. The app is barely three days old, so establishing an early presence is key. Be one of the Threads influencer pioneers and start setting the bar for your future following.
