This is a sign of the times. This week, LinkedIn shared its new data on remote job postings, as well as the difference in this year’s remote roles compared to last. LinkedIn’s latest insights have some surprising stats – though roles in ‘Technology, Media, and Information’ being remote come as no surprise, given that many online and IT-related jobs can now be conducted remotely, ‘Real Estate’ would’ve been the last thing on people’s list, or so one would think.

Done Remotely

If we take a look at the remote job options in the ‘Education’ sector, many of these, you would assume, relate to higher education, not teaching among youngsters. It’s clear that many industries are now undergoing a revolution into remote work, which, in turn, will have more businesses eventually offering more remote roles to recruit the best talent.

It’s a rather interesting consideration for the future of work. If you want to check out LinkedIn’s full data list, go here. LinkedIn has also shared more insight on these trends here. Let’s look at some of the key notes, shall we?

  • The top three industries with the highest shares of openings are ‘Technology, Information, and Media’, ‘Education’, and ‘Administrative Support Services’; coming in at 41.2%, 29%, and 27.4% respectively.

  • These values rose from 26.3%, 14.3%, and 18.6% respectively from last year’s measures.

  • Surprisingly, ‘Arts & Recreation’ experienced a 0.2% decrease from its 10.5% share back in 2021, but perhaps this is due to the wide reopening of physical art and recreational venues since the latter parts of last year.

  • Likewise, it’s also surprising to see that manufacturing nearly more than doubled from 5.2% in 2021 to 10.8% this year, considering that manufacturing primarily consists of physical tasks and often requires those working in the industry to be on-site.

If you were to apply the same premise behind the decrease in arts & recreation, then one would think that this too would’ve gone down. Perhaps the introduction of new and evolving AR and VR elements would help address this.

  • Real Estate gains much of the same benefits, with newer ways to connect and transact using virtual methods.

The Wrap

As LinkedIn continues to see high levels of engagement, with the pandemic essentially helping it build-up, the platform now places itself to be a key app during this post-pandemic transition – the shift back to standard working conditions might be more drastic than initially thought, with people now coming to appreciate the value of remote work. It just goes to show how far social media has come and evolved and has essentially become an integral part of our lives and socio-economic models.
