Meta recently released a new Instagram sticker creation option. Instagram’s new sticker creation process allows users to cut out a photo and turn it into a sticker. While the idea itself is not a novelty, the application of such a process is relatively uncommon on Social Media. Instagram’s new option could give it a much-needed engagement boost.

The Snip Tool on IG

Official examples show that the new Instagram sticker creation option enables users to identify specific entities within their photos. After identification, users can conveniently cut and paste them in isolation, effectively using them as stickers within Reels and Stories.

Not surprisingly, Meta’s arch-nemesis, Apple, has a similar option that it introduced with its iOS 16 update. Apple’s version of photo cut-out allows users to isolate photo subjects, allowing users to use them separately as sticker-like images. However, Apple’s sticker cut-outs have a slight edge over Instagram’s version. Apple sticker cut-outs are compatible with any of the company’s patented communication channels (mail, messages, etc.).

Again, the idea behind this new Instagram sticker option is nothing new. Then again, nothing from Meta really is. Thinking about it, a reputation like that would detract from Meta’s overall appeal. Regardless, reputational damage has never stopped Meta’s ever-forward-moving march. Despite the competition, this new option could improve the app’s capacity to create stickers for exclusive use within Instagram.

Furthermore, Instagram Chief Adam Mosseri says users can create stickers beyond their camera roll. Users can also create stickers from eligible images they see on Instagram, expanding their creative capacity even more. That means that users can potentially use publicly posted images, though there is seemingly no specific opt-out option as yet.

The Wrap

Whether or not a future update will bring an opt-out choice, the new Instagram sticker creation option should improve engagement. The option is still in testing, so there could be plenty of changes if and when it makes it to the full app. In any case, we can see plenty of ways in which such a process could benefit Instagram engagement. Brands and personal accounts could use Instagram’s new sticker creation option to further customize and personalize their content.
