Instagram has shown that its revenue share program, on occasion, is better than others. That said, Instagram recently announced that it will be expanding access to its creator subscription program. The expansion adds ten more regions to the roster, granting local creators additional benefits. If you had limited opportunities on Instagram before, this update could significantly change that.

More Is More

Instagram originally launched its subscription program to selected creators in the US in January (2023). The program allows creators to charge a variable monthly amount (between $0.99 – $9.99) to give fans access to exclusive content. Originally limited to the US, Instagram is expanding access to its creator subscription program to 10 more regions.

Subscription-only exclusives include:

  • Subscriber Posts, Stories, Reels, and Lives: You can create reels, posts, and stories just for your subscribers. Share exclusive content, use interactive story stickers or even go live with your paying subscribers only.

  • Subscriber Highlights: Your newest exclusive stories will automatically be saved to a highlight that is only visible to subscribers so they never miss a story.

  • Subscriber Broadcast and Social Channels: You can give your subscribers special access or information in subscriber-only channels.

  • Subscriber Badges: You will see a subscriber badge next to comments and messages your subscribers send so you can easily identify and prioritize interacting with them.

These give creators more ways to generate direct revenue for their efforts, which could act as valuable audience lures.

Over the next several weeks, Instagram says that creators in the following regions can access Subscriptions: Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Spain, and The UK. Users in these regions can start earning from their efforts, which should also improve overall Instagram appeal.

Instagram Subscriptions are similar to Twitter’s current subscription program, at least in terms of providing exclusive offers to paying users. It’s interesting to see Instagram turn up the heat on Twitter, capitalizing on the launch of Threads. Early Threads hype seems to have significantly died down, but Instagram could expand Subscriptions to it in the future. That could provide creators with more monetary opportunities through platform-building.

The real challenge for creators lies in formulating a sustainable program for providing value-added content. It won’t be easy, but it’s an important step in making users get their money’s worth.

There is a reason why few creators end up becoming huge online celebrities. For the most part, such ambition requires an equivalent level of planning and strategy. Aspiring creators must have a sustainable value-add plan that maximizes their earning efforts. Of course, the most important element here is having the option to begin with. It’s good to see Meta working to provide more monetization avenues for its creators.

The Wrap

At this stage, and based on audience reach potential, it could be worth building on Instagram over Twitter. Threads has proven that it has the potential to rival, if not overtake Twitter. It could become an increasingly beneficial pathway for platform stars and aspirants alike. Besides expanding access to its creator subscription program, Instagram also published this 10-page Subscriptions guide.
