There are a ton of Google Chrome extensions that you can install and enable. While some can put a lot of load on your machine and guzzle up a lot of resources, the right ones can revolutionize your workflow. Google’s looking to make it easier for people to find the best, most trusted Chrome extensions through new Badges within the Google Store listings that highlight the ideal extensions and developers.

As Google explains:

“Today, we’re announcing two new extension badges: the Featured badge and the Established Publisher badge. Both badges are live on the Chrome Web Store today.”

Show Me Your Badge

The ‘Featured’ badge will be assigned to extensions that follow Google’s technical best practices, meeting a high standard for user experience and design. The new badges will be visible in the Chrome Store, adding a level of assurance for these hand-picked solutions, each of which has been manually assessed by Google’s Team.

The second badge denotes ‘Established Publishers’, which are extension developers who were already able to verify their identity and have demonstrated compliance with Google’s developer program policies.

These additions should help provide more assurance as to the quality of each extension. With various developers and apps using Chrome Extensions to track and collect user data, it’s a refreshing sight to see Google supply us with more clarity on this front simultaneously aiding top developers drive more interest towards their offers.

True enough, after Meta’s Cambridge Analytical Scandal, users have become increasingly wary of what each extension tracks and how that information could be used. With Apple’s ATT update restricting data collection for developers and advertisers alike, many more now seek alternatives to gain additional insight. Extensions such as these could be another way to acquire more information.

Google says that publishers can’t pay to receive either of these two new badges, but they can submit a request to have their extension reviewed to receive the Featured badge via the support page.

The Wrap

It’s one way for Google to ensure that users are getting and using the best tools, avoiding potential scammers and other opportunistic actors who are looking to exploit Google’s system. It may not be an overbearing addition, but it’s one of the more minor ones that still have quite an impact.

Either way, as we all head towards the next era of the internet, newer, more intuitive Chrome extensions should help provide people with a more immersive and safer experience.
