Another social media milestone has been hit! Despite gaining clout and experiencing a number of major setbacks, it’s a HUGE day for TikTok as it finally reaches 1 billion monthly active users! TikTok creators worldwide are celebrating as their beloved platform becomes one of the most used and fastest-growing ones to date.

The amount of time it took TikTok to reach this monumental number completely overshadows Facebook and Instagram, pointing out that the foundations and culture developed by and through the platform is something revolutionary indeed.

In TikTok’s own words:

“More than 1 billion people around the world now come to TikTok every month to be entertained as they learn, laugh, or discover something new. We’re honored to be a home for our immensely diverse community of families, small businesses, and creators who transform into our favorite stars.”

As it stands, TikTok might be in a position to take the reins and direct how and where the social media landscape goes from here. Even if you have mixed feelings about it, numbers show that TikTok is the platform-to-be right now.

Learning From The Past

Perhaps one attribute that can explain why TikTok is so successful is that the platform was able to quickly adapt to the temperament of the majority of its users, which are the younger generations, thus leading to better reception, engagement, and support. In relation to lowered attention spans, people just love video. Short-form video content is the future.

Some people see TikTok as the second coming of Vine, the 2013 platform that started it all. Though TikTok did not pioneer the idea, it was able to learn from the app that did and improve upon the execution, integration, and support, leading to it reaching insurmountable heights. Almost every other social media platform is trying to do what TikTok is doing, and given the current situation, it’s no surprise why.

By The Numbers

To give you an idea of how much traction TikTok acquired, it rose from 54 million users in January 2018 to a billion in September 2021, that’s around 950 million users over the last 45 months!

In comparison, Instagram started at 100 million in February 2013 and got its billion in June 2018, nearly five years after it gained popularity.

Likewise, Facebook currently has 2.8 billion monthly active users, a number that took more than a decade to acquire. In contrast, TikTok was able to rack up nearly half of that count in roughly two years.

While the platform still has a ways to go regarding stable profitability in terms of short-form video, it has shown great growth potential even when up against the more notable and established players.

The Wrap

While TikTok continues to dominate the field when it comes to audience connection and relevancy, it still has a thing or two to learn about effective monetization and business methodology before it can claim the title “Best of the Best”. With recent news of the platform delving more  into eCommerce, it shouldn’t be too long before we see TikTok on the “Most Lucrative Platforms” list.

However, it’s not all cakes and roses, as concerns regarding the app’s potential links to the Chinese government pose serious questions regarding data privacy and online security. These are more concerns than actual, verified threats, but due diligence and caution are still advised.

At the end of the day, though you shouldn’t put all your resources into one platform, TikTok is at least worth a shot and could be the right platform for some aspects of your business. It just hit a billion, is pretty darn hot right now, and the holidays are just around the corner; what do you think would be a good move?
