Unbeknownst to many, WeChat remains an obscure messaging app, despite having literally billions of users. With nearly two-thirds of its 1.3 billion users located in the area, WeChat is the most popular messaging platform in China, if not the only one. Surprisingly, some 19 million daily active users also come from the US, while various businesses also use it to promote their brands. Needless to say, WeChat is the world’s most popular messaging app but is also highly indigenous; it’s not exclusively for Chinese use, so there are opportunities if you carefully plan your approach.

The Voice of Billions

Messaging engagement is rising, and it is quickly becoming a key connection trend. One could even say that there is a resurgence in the prominence of messaging as a main, if not primary, means of communication online, just as it had originally been since the onset of BlackBerry Messenger, the first messaging app released in 2005.

With messaging back on the rise, it’s important to take stock of which apps have the biggest followings, activities, and offerings available, allowing you to optimize your strategy and maximize results. Tapping into the latest trends and shifts in messaging will also better position you to start 2023 strong, on top of improving your brand image and relevance. To do that, take a look at these key WeChat statistics:

  • At least 20M active official WeChat accounts that promote content.

  • WeChat Work has around 250M users.

NOTE: WeChat Work is WeChat’s internal messaging and management platform, similar to Meta’s ‘Workplace’, but it is FREE for China-based companies and is ahead by about 243 million users.

AdChina created an infographic that highlighted other pertinent details, including:

  • WeChat is the 5th most widely used app in the world, and it’s mainly just messaging.

  • 22.7% of WeChat users are aged 51 and over, while 22.3% are under 24. WeChat primarily caters to older users as around 98.5% of all senior users in China (aged 50 – 80) with a smartphone use the app.

  • WeChat accounts for around 57.9% of China’s total population.

  • At least 45 billion messages are sent daily on the app, including about 205 million video messages and 6.1 billion voice messages.

  • 83% of users depend on the app for work, while 43% use it to donate to various charities.

  • Over 34% of WeChat official account owners agree that the app helps them cut as much as 30% of costs.

  • WeChat Pay has around 72 million registered businesses.

The Wrap

There are way more statistics on the full infographic, so we highly recommend checking it out. To cut the story short, WeChat is huge, and despite needing to be based in China to gain access to the full suite of insights and benefits, there are definitely some good opportunities to be had if you take your time and study its structure and dynamics. WeChat offers a wide range of demographic information that can be useful for identifying your most important clientele groups.
