Perhaps one of the biggest questions that we ask each year is ‘What are the most visited websites this year?’ While those in the upper echelons of the list occasionally trade positions (with little variance), for the most part, the rest of the rankings do show some interesting insights. To start, Google remains the most visited website, with Facebook still being the most frequented one, based on web traffic.

Give Me The Traffic!

Actually, YouTube beats out Facebook in terms of frequent visits, however, it couldn’t take the crown because it was supposedly categorized as being only a ‘partial’ social app. To help paint a better picture of which sites gain the most traffic, VisualCapitalist used SimilarWeb data to create a ‘Bubble Chart’ that visualizes the variance in traffic.

On that note, following Facebook, Twitter and Instagram are the next most visited social platforms, which is likely in line with what most would expect – however, TikTok’s low numbers probably also stand out, given its dominance of modern media zeitgeist. Of course, there’s a reason for this – the data provided by VisualCapitalist is based on website visits and not usage, so apps like Snapchat and TikTok, which lean more towards in-app experience, don’t really fare as well as the others on the chart.

In that sense, it’s interesting to see which platforms are engaging audiences through their desktop offerings. You can check out VisualCapitalist’s full explainer here. Meanwhile, here are some noteworthy mentions:

  • Baidu (5B)

  • Wikipedia (4.8B)

  • Yandex (3.4B)

  • Yahoo (3.3B)

Yahoo is perhaps one of the oldest websites here, yet what’s interesting to see is that it still managed to break the 2B visit threshold, despite many similar and more modern alternatives now available. VisualCapitalist also included a quick categorical breakdown, revealing that ‘News & Media Platforms’ accounted for 11 out of the 50 total websites that were ranked. ‘Social Media Networks’ followed closely behind with 10. Though last by category, it’s still worth noting that ‘Video Games Consoles & Accessories’ made it at all, which does imply a growing interest in the sector.

The Wrap

Not much to break down, really. At most, the visual does serve as a great guide to help direct your efforts and target the most visited sites to either try and partner up with or focus on. This is perhaps VisualCapitalist’s same driving logic for creating the overview – to help drive more action in more brands and businesses to tap into the traffic of some of the world’s most visited websites and apps.
