Okay you lads and lasses, we’re sure that almost all of us are curious about the latest Search trends, and how they’re impacting all our SEO efforts. Well, never one to miss their mark, SEMRush put together another astounding overview of the ‘State of Search in 2023’, which incorporates a range of key data points on updates, changes, and shifts happening within the Search market.

The State

If you can contextualize and fully break down your traffic numbers, then you’ll see just how many opportunities can be had. If you want the full, detailed experience, then we recommend you check out the full State of Search report here. Otherwise, let’s go over some of SEMRush’s key findings, starting with traffic trends.

The report states that monthly average visits sit somewhere around 140B, based on the top 50,000 domains in 2022. In particular, both Search Estimates and Search Traffic Shares remained high in November of 2022. Surprisingly, overall 2022 traffic was lower than in 2021 for the same domains that SEMRush tracked.

In terms of industry trends, particularly worth noting is how media, online education, and travel are among the highest-averaging industries for Search activity, which is partially indicative of user intent to either partake or consume information involving or related to these industries.

When looking at Google Updates and SERP Volatility Trends, ‘Tech’ was the biggest activity driver in 2021, followed by ‘Spam’. Going back a bit further, in 2019, Google Core updates were up by as much as 248%, followed by a 2020 March core update (175%), and the 2023 March core update (163%). Volatility was higher in 2022 than it was in 2021.

When it came to how people searched, the report stated that keywords used in 2022 were more commercial and transactional than they were in 2021, which does indicate a certain directional shift in user intent. Likewise, Google CTRs, primarily having to do with organic clicks, shot through the roof, at least for the first result both on desktop and mobile inquiries.

The Wrap

The final sections of the report look at more trend data, specifically, SERP features and related trends. SEMRush’s report expounds on everything far better than any article or synopsis can, so we highly recommend grabbing yourself a copy so that you always have a reference.

In case you were wondering, the entire report was basically about trends, which is essentially the nature of Social Media. To learn to look at, analyze, and jump on trends is an essential skill if you want to succeed with your online efforts. It would be a grave understatement to say that these are some incredibly useful notes, so if you want to level up your game, this would be a good starting point.
