Since ChatGPT came into the scene, everybody was suddenly interested in AI chatbots and similar generative tools. Given how beneficial and boosting generative AI tools can be for customer service, a lot of brands, even big ones, have begun integrating AI into their processes, reaping improved results in turn. AI chatbots can spit out highly convincing, natural responses, albeit being a bit overconfident at times. But, what if AI could also build virtual worlds based on text prompts?

OOF! Build!

Multi-billion dollar company and gaming franchise Roblox is exploring this possibility of text-based AI world-building with its developer tools, which are designed to make it possible for nearly anyone to build experiences and virtual objects in this new, youth-focused virtual ecosystem.

The company says that it’s testing two different implementations of generative AI – one that creates virtual materials based on a natural language prompt, with the other being one that can create code based on text inputs. Both of these models will roll out to Roblox Studio developers over the coming weeks. Want more insights? Check out Roblox’s official teaser.

As per Roblox CTO Daniel Sturman:

“…Some creators know how to code, but may have limited experience creating high-fidelity 3D models. Others may be more experienced with model design, but less experienced with code. In both cases, we see a future in which even a beginner (such as myself for example – I’m a terrible artist!) can get a running head start as they look to bring their imagination to life in a Roblox experience.”

In recent years the company has articulated its goal of becoming the infrastructure for the Metaverse – not just the place where people go to hang out in virtual worlds, but the actual toolset they use to build said worlds. Roblox certainly has some competition (Epic Games, etc.), but AI-based world-building, should its tests prove successful, is where it could make an even more attractive platform for novice game developers to build out potentially hit virtual spaces that have made Roblox so sticky with younger audiences.

The Wrap

While Roblox isn’t a social platform, it does make for an ideal bridge that can connect one sector with another (i.e inter-industry connections). Roblox is one of the big names that highlight how the whole gaming industry has evolved beyond simply being about games. The gaming community is a diverse audience, whose members have their own networks and hidden talents, making it a rich resource for leads and such. Though you might not have initially thought of incorporating Roblox or gaming elements in your approach, hopefully, you reconsider that now. Yes, it will take some getting accustomed to, but if you mean to reach and expand to younger audiences, then few compare to the draw that Roblox has.
