Bluesky? Sounds more like a weather forecast instead of a social app. It’s quite possible that former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey’s ‘Bluesky’ is the Twitter replacement that we’re all looking for. As legacy checkmarks are removed on Twitter, leaving many high-profile users more vulnerable to impersonation, Bluesky, the decentralized Twitter alternative, has been released on Android, following its initial launch on iOS back in February.

A Blue Sky Waiting Tomorrow

Though Jack’s app remains invite-only, which will restrict take-up for now. But still, Bluesky is growing fast, and, well, it essentially looks like a re-skinned version of Twitter’s classic UI, and as more people go looking for a Twitter replacement, maybe now is the time for Bluesky to make a move, and expand access to more users.

As it says on Bluesky’s website:

“We’re focusing on re-building the social web by connecting disconnected silos and returning control of the social experience to users. Our mission is to develop and drive the adoption of technologies for open and decentralized public conversation.”

Decentralization is also a key focus of the cryptocurrency movement, which essentially aims to take power away from the traditional powers that be, and put it back into the hands of the people, by providing each person with a means to manage their data and process. From a Social Media perspective, Bluesky is a means to re-distribute power back to users, and away from big tech players, in the form of more control over how algorithms and engagement systems are developed.

At the project launch, Jack Dorsey outlined three key focus areas:

  • To facilitate enhanced efforts to address abuse and misleading information.

  • To enable users and the broader community to have more input into platform algorithms.

  • To improve conversational health by giving people more input into platform rules.

It does sound pretty appealing to many Social Media users, and, as Elon Musk continues to erode what Twitter once was, it could be that Bluesky shapes up as a better alternative compared to the other Twitter clones that have recently cropped up. True enough, The Verge’s Jay Peters dubs it as the current best Twitter alternative. This is expected, seeing as how many of those working on Bluesky are former Tweeps, explaining why it feels very Twitter-esque. With more people now seeking an alternative, it could be Bluesky’s time to shine.

The Wrap

This would no doubt anger the current, and rather vindictive, Chief Twit Elon Musk. As part of Musk’s takeover, Dorsey rolled over his shares of Twitter into Bluesky, which had been wholly funded by Twitter at that point. If Bluesky emerges as a competitor, you can bet that Musk will treat this as an affront, which could have impacts for the new app, but Dorsey has tussled with big boys before. The fact remains that whatever Musk decides to do from here on out, Bluesky is a viable Twitter alternative. Once more people and ad partners become fed up with Twitter, Bluesky has its doors fully open.
