Video is undoubtedly the content king. Almost everywhere you look online nowadays will show you at least one type of content that features video. In fact, it’s one of the core drivers behind TikTok’s rise to fame, as well as the unprecedented amplification of the whole short-form trend. On that note, YouTube’s taking a slightly different approach, launching two new tests for its ‘Community Posts’.

Available to YouTube channels with 500 or more subscribers, Community Posts are what you’d expect – feed-based updates that you can view within the ‘Community’ tab. Besides their whole video shtick, YouTube has recently begun tapping more into certain Social Media elements, with the entire idea behind Community Posts being a Social-Media style update Feed that aims to improve engagement with your YouTube community.

This time, it appears that YouTube is aiming to provide more Community interaction options, rather than directly adding video-related elements. On that note, the first thing you might not have noticed is YouTube’s new visual editing process – more specifically for image-based posts, YouTube is apparently adding more ways for users to compose their Community updates. As YouTube puts it:

“If you’re a creator in this experiment, you’ll be able to use the YouTube app to add filters, text, and stickers to images for posts. This experiment will roll out to a small percentage of creators who use iOS devices and have the Community tab enabled.”

YouTube began the revamp of its visual editing updates on Android back in August. Since then, it has expanded both accessibility and functionality, with its various tools now better facilitating new ways to generate more engagement and enhance Community updates. YouTube has so far added disappearing Community Posts, the ability to post GIFs and images, and even the capacity to create polls to help users bolster their interaction with channel viewers. To this growing list, YouTube is now introducing ‘Quizzes’ as the latest Community posting option.

As YouTube explains:

“Quizzes introduce a new, interactive way for creators to engage with viewers, and in cases of educational channels, help them learn. Creators in the beta can create quizzes the same way as other kinds of Community Posts. We’re beginning to test the quizzes beta with a small number of creators and will look to expand in the future based on feedback.”

The Wrap

Both of these tests are now live on the app. Perhaps the more important thing to take note of here is how YouTube chooses to advance in different areas and not focus solely on just content-creation. Despite the real value of Community Posts still being somewhat uncertain, it does give off the idea of potentially being a valuable complement to classic YouTube video uploads. At the very least, it gives users the ability to share more with their audience in the app, outside of video. In the long run, it could prove highly beneficial for YouTube, adding to it another dynamic perspective that might lead to the discovery of new use cases.
