Gauging the relevance of Twitter Spaces is still a bit challenging. While Spaces has been given its own tab and while there are some interesting use cases for live audio, Twitter hasn’t really tapped into such elements yet, or at least we’re not seeing enough active Spaces to pique interest.

According to a new finding by reverse engineering expert and app superstar Jane Manchun Wong, Twitter’s working on a new option that would enable users to start a new Space about any given Tweet, direct from the options menu.

Adding Space

As noted by Wong, depending on how it works, it could spark a whole new trend of dumping on people’s rubbish takes, by launching into an immediate, in-the-moment monologue of your grievances, which others could then join to rub further salt into wounds. It could be a good way to spark more real-time Tweet engagement. Now, when a story breaks, you can immediately launch a Space, with the topic already referenced within the context link.

Twitter, for years, has been trying to work out how to capitalize on its position as the ‘Place-to-be’ for real-time chatters. It has approached this by utilizing TV shows and sports discussions, which also happen to be the top examples of its dominance in this space. Several years back, Twitter was working on various apps that would enable you to Tweet in real-time while watching live sports on the same screen. This is part of Twitter’s bigger push into live-stream broadcasting, which seems to be the ideal way to merge these elements.

Of course, such never took off, but Twitter remains to be the best place for real-time discussion, with many trends and breaking new stories coming on the back of the latest Tweets. Such was perfectly exemplified in the Trump era, where the former president wound announce policy stances through Tweeting. Yet, even so, Twitter has never been able to fully harness the element and make itself a more critical connective tool for more people, though its user base still trails well behind Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, and maybe even LinkedIn!

For some reason, incoming new owner Elon Musk believes that he can achieve 200% more user growth in the next three years. It’s not exactly sure how he’ll pull this off, but Spaces do seem to be an important element in this. Even simply improving discovery might already help out Musk’s endeavors, helping make Twitter a more essential platform for more people.

The Wrap

Giving more focus towards Spaces seems to have been a regular project for Twitter, launching initiatives that hype it up and present it as a massive opportunity, only to be later left behind with limited development focus and an even lower chance to succeed. Perhaps Musk’s focus is what Twitter needs, and that alone might help bring more focus on its features into line.
