‘Musker’ is coming…

While that sounds like a phrase ripped from an occult, fictional book, it’s the term of endearment we’ve chosen to define Elon Musk’s Twitter reformation plan. Of the various experiments pre- and post- the Musk takeover, one seems to actually be progressing – based on the recent findings of app Reverse Engineering Guru Jane Manchun Wong, Twitter continues to develop its own virtual gifting-type option, which would provide a range of purchasable stickers that you could then give to people to support really good Tweets.

Big Blue Awards

Based on official images, Twitter’s new Tweet Awards-based monetization push is a range of new emoji awards that users can purchase for different amounts. So, we should be expecting a new type of in-app currency on Twitter now? ‘Gold Twitter Coins’ – yep, sounds very much like a mobile game currency, but we’re perfectly fine with that. You can then gift these new ‘coins’ to other users, who would then be able to convert them to cash.

The concept is pretty much the same as Facebook’s virtual gifts, which are purchasable via ‘Stars’ to donate funds to your favorite creators. On the other end of the ravine is YouTube with its ‘SuperStickers’, while TikTok has its live gifts. Heck, even Reddit has a similar sticker gifting option. So, there seems to be a rather sizable roster where gifting options have seen some semblance of success. So, will that work on Twitter?

Well, it should, given how creators are just as inspiring on each platform. While there might be those who would balk at the idea of cluttering the Twitter feed with even more Emoji-style characters, some people do use them, reinforcing the idea that these new Tweet coins could provide another way for Twitter to generate incremental revenue. It’s simple – if you don’t like them, don’t use them.

In some ways, Twitter does seem like it would provide fewer reasons for such donations, given its focus on brevity. But Musk has also flagged longer video uploads, along with a more YouTube-style system for monetization, in hopes of attracting more creators to the platform. Since it has been mostly a re-hashing and re-releasing of past projects on Twitter, this does seem like a good fit.

The Wrap

It does seem that Twitter will launch this soon, especially if it’s still using its more limited resources to continue development. While we could ask Twitter directly in the hopes of getting even just a generic response, Twitter doesn’t even have a communications department at the moment. Maybe that should be in Musk’s future ambitions, along with finding suitable replacements for all the roles and teams that he sacked. Let’s finalize it this way, if you see it, it’s there, otherwise, it’s back to project limbo.
