Hooray, more Twitter news! This is a pretty good streak, given how Twitter has had to deal with an incredible load of inconvenience brought about by its tussle with Elon Musk. Part of its list of new developments is testing a new format for publisher links with what it’s calling its ‘Tweet Tiles’ display.

Twitter is also in the process of revitalizing its withered links with content partners. So while this news would also benefit Twitter, it’s more a welcomed prompt for some of Twitter’s more estranged affiliates to seek potential new opportunities on the platform, including increased exposure and even higher reach.

What’s The Link?

As you can see here, Tweet Tiles will facilitate new visual formats for Twitter links, with larger images, variable fonts, and prominent CTAs to drive more clicks. As Twitter explains:

“Right now, people on iOS and web may see and interact with Tweet Tiles that include text, images, videos, or other elements like a button from people in the initial test group. These formats are designed to easily engage with content and make your timeline more dynamic and visual.”

The option could provide new ways to stand out in the fast-moving Tweet Feed, helping to drive better performance based on these updated link-preview displays. Twitter’s been working on various, updated Tweet formats, including a ‘Quote Tweet with reaction’ option, which looks to essentially salvage some of the key elements from its now retired Fleets process, an updated text editor option for Tweets, enabling you to add more color and visual presence to your comments, along with integrated support for various content formats within a single Tweet.

This updated publisher link-preview format, which is part of Twitter’s new developer tool options, does add another consideration in this respect, though it’s only limited to certain publishers at this stage. Twitter also notes that this is still mainly experimental, which means that not all users will see the new tile format, while Retweeting a Tweet Tile or sharing its URL may not show up in the original display.

The Wrap

It could be a helpful addition for publishers and it’ll be interesting to see whether or not it helps drive more referral traffic from Tweets as a result. This is significant because Twitter has never really been great, comparatively, for most websites when it comes to referring people through. Despite the platform driving a lot of real-time discussions, Twitter users are, in general, less likely to tap on a link – but maybe, just maybe, with improved CTA presentation, that could change to some degree.

We’ll have to wait and see just what results they’ll actually get. Right now, the new Tweet Tiles are currently being tested with select partner publishers.
