Two- or multi-factor authentication adds a new level of friction to the log-in process, which can be frustrating day-to-day, seeing as how they’re used will have you needing a secondary device to access your account. At the same time, it’s one of the best ways to shield your account from hacking – as reflected in Beyond Infinity’s newest survey.
The results of the survey show that while three in four respondents find multi-factor authentication an annoyance, 65% have also indicated that it saved them from an account being compromised. With much of our social lives now playing out online, as if being a central component of the space, it becomes clear just how important an extra layer of protection can help avoid cases of fraud and identity theft.

76% of people actually know what Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) is.
In fact, 38% of people who were unaware of what MFA was said that they had used it on at least one type of account.
Ironically, 79% of those who did use MFA were also prevented by it from accessing at least one of their accounts.
62% say that they’ve experienced MFA fatigue, while 49% said that they abandoned cart because they got tired of trying to log in. 53% said this frustration has prevented them from making a payment.
There’s also a section that further illustrates the dynamics of MFA use and MFA Fatigue attacks. It mostly offers a more comprehensive overview of the various pertinent stats that makes MFA, and secondary profile protection protocols in general, a more critical consideration.
The last section talks about auto-fill and auto-enabled passwords. 79% of respondents have auto-fill-enabled passwords on at least one account. Meanwhile, 92% have forgotten a password due to using autofill. The same comprehensive chart can be found in this section, similar to the ones found in the MFA section.

It’s evident that two-factor authentication does add another layer of protection for accounts, but it’s not always a clear-cut scenario that only shows the good side of processes like these. While they’re made to increase protection, lack of oversight often has them locking users out of accounts, on top of securing it. That last bit can really be frustrating, leading sufferers to question the viability of secondary protection measures like this.
