Besides duking it out legally on other fronts and juggling headache-after-headache with Elon Musk and his team, Twitter still manages to deliver updates. Presently, Twitter’s looking to help users ensure that they never miss out on exclusive product launches, helping businesses connect with interested shoppers, via a new prompt that they’ve coined ‘Product Drops’. Merchants can add this new massage alert to their Tweet listings.

As Twitter explains:

“People come to Twitter to talk about products and product drops every day. And merchants have long been dropping products on Twitter without any native product support. We’re excited to change that and introduce new shopping features that empower shoppers to stay on top of the launches that matter most to them and provide merchants with another way to engage shoppers around big product moments.”

Handle With Care

Soon enough, merchants will be able to add a ‘Remind Me’ button to their Tweets about upcoming launches, which will provide more product information and a means to get updated on the release.

“When you click on the merchant’s Tweet, you’ll open the Product Details Page – a full-screen space where you can see all the information you need to make informed and confident purchase decisions. This includes the price, pictures, a description of the product, and a clickable hashtag that will show you what other shoppers on Twitter are saying about the product.”

From here, users can choose to add a reminder, to which Twitter will then send an in-app reminder roughly 15 minutes before the time of launch. This would help to ensure that you’re among the first to shop for the item, which not only eliminates FOMO but also nets you additional bragging rights. Users will be able to make a purchase from the same notification. Tapping through on the final drop alert will guide users to a ‘Shop on Website’ button, where they’ll be able to purchase the item as soon as it becomes available.

It could be a good way to drive in-app purchase activity, with the platform’s real-time nature essentially boosting the FOMO factor, likely prompting more impulse purchases. It’s not hard to imagine NFT traders jumping on this too, which could be a way to reinvigorate interest and excitement in their products.

This is the latest in Twitter’s shopping tools, which also includes new Product links within Tweets, updated interactive product showcase ads (in development), and product display modules for Professional Profiles.

The Wrap

As with all social platforms, the opportunity to add in-stream shopping and make tons on the side is too good to pass up. With users already Tweeting about products and the latest brand updates, it does make sense for Twitter to lean into this when and where possible.

Twitter’s new reminder button will initially be made available to users in the US who use the app in English and on iOS. Twitter’s testing Product Drops with a select set of partners, including known brands Dior, Fossil, Home Depot, and LEGO. It’ll be interesting to see where Twitter will take this push.
