Twitter has been going non-stop at it with developing its NFT profile display option. After months of tedious, comprehensive testing, it’s finally bringing the option to Twitter Blue subscribers on iOS as part of an initial rollout phase. This Tweet marks their official announcement and the latest progress Twitter has achieved concerning its push for more NFT integration.

Blue NFTs

As seen in the video, Twitter Blue subscribers – a.k.a paying Twitter users – will be able to showcase their NFTs in a more ‘certifiable’ capacity, with the images, as mentioned before, directly linking back to ownership data on OpenSea. The added credibility, under this process, helps to limit “unauthorized” NFT use, as anyone else besides “actual” NFT owners may bear the official hexagonal logo.

Twitter explains:

“Twitter is where people go to talk about things they care about, and often where people have their first experience with crypto and NFTs. We’re now seeing people use NFTs as a form of identity and self-expression, and as a way to join the thriving community and increasingly active conversation on Twitter. This new feature provides a seamless, user-friendly way for people on Twitter to verify their NFT ownership by allowing them to directly connect their crypto wallets to Twitter and select an NFT from their collection as their new profile picture.”

Twitter Blue subscribers will see the new option within their profile picture settings, guiding them through the NFT linking process. Subscribers will also have the option to link their crypto wallet, which also links to their NFT collection, establishing a ‘pipeline’ between your NFT image and ownership information.

Upon successful linkage, your new profile image should sport the hexagonal shape (same for Twitter Spaces chats), providing profile visitors with more contextual information about said image when tapped.

As mentioned at the beginning of this piece, Twitter has been diligently tinkering on this project for a couple of months now, so it’s a bit surprising to see the feature go live, especially when you consider how popular NFTs are on the platform. True enough, last year, NFT sales reached a staggering $24.9 billionversus 2020’s meager $94.9 million. The market is exploding, and more NFTs are becoming a common sight in various places on the internet.

At the very least, it’s interesting to see the option added as a Twitter Blue exclusive. Twitter Blue, which was launched in the U.S. last November, in addition to Australia, Canada, and New Zealand, is Twitter’s $2.99 monthly subscription that gives users access to Twitter’s gated higher functions, such as undoing Tweets, extra themes and colors, and other app-exclusives. Initially, the offering didn’t really kick off as much as Twitter would have wanted, but the addition of NFT display images could potentially turn things around.

On the topic of accountability, while not everyone will be able to access Twitter Blue, with some not even wanting to touch the subscription at all, there remains to be a larger portion of NFT profiles that won’t have the hexagonal frame. Ideally, Twitter would want that all NFT owners make use of the hexagonal frame so that it’d be easier to catch those who are potentially thieving content, but as of the moment, that’s just not possible.

The Wrap

It could be a very decisive move for Twitter Blue – the addition of a very popular element will surely draw attention to Twitter’s previously-lack-luster subscription offer. Based on its current user count, even if just 1% of its users sign up for Blue, that’s still more than $6 million a month. You can bet that more than 1% of Twitter users are keen on NFTs, and with Meta also looking to get into the NFT market, now’s the best time for Twitter to make a bigger push in the NFT space.

There’s a lot more complexity regarding NFTs overall, but right now, they stand to be a rather big element with regards to the future of digital connection. Twitter does note that it’ll eventually be bringing the NFT display option to all users, so those not wanting to spend the extra $3 for a Blue subscription need only wait.
