Twitter has released two new updates for DMs, which have been under the hammer within Twitter’s workshops over the last few months. Now, these new updates are getting a full launch in the app. Is Twitter stepping up its DM game? Well, isn’t that something?

Straight Response

To start, users will now be able to directly reply to any message within a DM thread, making it easier to interact within group chats and discussions, with greater clarity around who and what they’re responding to in-stream. As seen in this example shared by none other than Social Media expert Matt Navarra, now, users are pretty much able to reply to specific messages within a chat thread, and that response will be aligned to the original message ‘bubble’, as opposed to being added to the end of the chain.

The second update is a new emoji picker within DMs, allowing users to respond to messages with a wider range of emoji options. Twitter originally previewed this option back in January, which will provide more ways to use quick emoji responses within DMs, which could add another layer of fun to your chat interactions.

To add to these updates, Chef Twit Elon Musk says that the first iteration of encrypted DMs will be launched this week, spicing up in-app user security and privacy just a tad bit more. Twitter has been developing encrypted DMs for months, with Musk stating that this was one of his priority projects when he first took over. While there have been concerns around the law enforcement cracks of encryption, the general consensus is that greater security for all supersedes the risks of facilitating such.

Musk also says that audio and video calling options will soon be available in Twitter DMs, expanding the option’s connective capacity. Over time, more social platform interactions are switching to private messaging, and away from public Feed posts. These new additions and updates could enable Twitter to better lean into this trend, facilitating a broader array of response options in people’s preferred connection channels in the app. The real challenge here is monetization, as many users aren’t really comfortable with ads in DMs. Fortunately, the shift towards entertainment also provides additional ad placement opportunities.

The Wrap

This has been the most significant habitual shift seen thus far on Social Media, and it’s evolving slowly, so most of us might not notice much at first. Over time, social Feeds will increasingly become more populated with entertainment and discovery elements, transforming into a space where people more commonly source content, and where users can share among their closer connection groups.

This is also a paradigm shift for ad approaches, and it’s worth considering how you can tap into this new normal, and what it could mean for your outreach strategies moving forward.
