Have you ever entertained the thought of just talking to yourself online? It might sound like a trippy and depressing idea but also think of the benefits it might be able to spell for users. Though not something that people do generally because there are offline apps that can do and manage these tasks more efficiently, this new update could potentially be used to keep notes, send yourself links you’d check out at a later date, keep track of appointments, and more.

Talk to Me

Not to bash WhatsApp, but what took it so long to implement this? Despite being bigger than Messenger, the latter was able to add this functionality earlier. Much like Messenger, you can now supposedly see yourself as a contact in your WhatsApp recipient list. The main difference is that WhatsApp will also highlight certain examples like shopping lists, travel inspirations, voice notes, etc. To be fair, I often message myself about these kinds of things during busy times to make it easier to note them down later on.

The feature has been in testing over the last weeks, with Beta testers getting access in late October. A few weeks of testing then all ready for a pre-alpha release? That’s an impressive feat in itself. Anyhow, WhatsApp has now confirmed that this is now being rolled out to all users on both Android and iOS. Better late than never, right? But more importantly, WhatsApp was able to get the feature live in a short time, meaning that if it was a highly-requested option, then users didn’t have to wait long to enjoy the benefits.

As noted, to send yourself a message on WhatsApp, you can choose yourself as a contact from the top of your contact list. Tapping on yourself will then open a chat window, where you can send yourself whatever it is that you want; a self-pointed GIF joke? Now that sounds funny.

On the topic of ‘talking to oneself’, sending yourself a message on WhatsApp or any other messaging platform that offers the same also presents a good opportunity for introspection, allowing users to either examine their inner thoughts and emotions or simply give themselves a pat on the back during times of extreme stress. A quick ‘You did well today’ can and will go a long way in supplying much-needed affirmation, which is highly sought after in this busy, often negative Social Media world.

The Wrap

If you think about it, there are a range of ways this could be used, both personally and professionally, although the latter is more applicative. It might be a small addition, but anything that adds more utility is always welcome. There may be instances where you need to send yourself pertinent, work-related details, but not want to save the same onto your phone or device. Before, people would say that you’d be crazy for talking to yourself, but now, it’s more common practice since we all need time to just talk to ourselves to see how we’re doing.
